Tommaso Saulini (1793-1864) - A fine early 19th century portrait shell cameo gold mounted brooch. The oval cameo carved with a profile portrait of a girl, signed T Saulini F, within a filigree and rope twist mount, the back with glazed locket panel, 62 x 53mm, 30.5g.There is a crack and two hairline cracks running from the top of her face to her nose, this is then running down the side of her body from behind the shell and is noticeable by the light line as seen in our photographs.

Illustrated by Angus McNeill, Seaforth Highlanders.', London, Longmans, Green & Co, June 1900, 1st edition, 3rd impression, 2 volumes, "Only 140 copies of the third printing were ever made available. it is far and away the scarcest of the first-edition printings" (Ronald I. Cohen, Churchill bibliographer), ex Prahran library, photogravure portrait frontispiece to volume 1 + 4 other portrait plates (lacks frontis of Kitchener to volume 2, else complete), one full-page photogravure to the text, 50 wood-engravings to the text by Angus Neil, 23 colour maps and battle plans, all but 3 folding (folding map vol.I facing p.146 "The Dervish Empire" with neat tape repair), 11 maps to the text of which 2 full-page, recased, retaining original publisher's dark blue cloth, with lettering and pictorial decorations to spines and front covers in gilt, replenished end papers and pastedowns, volume I with publisher's 32pp catalogue of adverts at end. This was Churchill's second book, after The Story of the Malakand Field Force (1898). "Overcoming the objections of Kitchener, the commander-in-chief of the expeditionary force, Churchill obtained a temporary posting with the 21st lancers, and arrived in the Sudan in time to take part in the celebrated cavalry charge at the battle of Omdurman (2 September 1898), in which the regiment galloped by accident into a hidden ravine crammed with armed men. Churchill, who shot and killed at least three of the enemy with his Mauser pistol, was cool and courageous but lucky to survive a bout of hand-to-hand fighting in which 22 British officers and men were killed. [In The River War] the story of the campaign is firmly embedded in a remarkably sympathetic history of the Sudanese revolt against Egyptian rule" (ODNB). Among his most widely-read works, it provides a highly entertaining account of his childhood, schooldays at Harrow, military training at Sandhurst, experiences as a war correspondent in Cuba, and service attached to the Malakand Field Force on the North-West Frontier of India, charging with the 21st Lancers at Omdurman, and as a POW in South Africa during the Boer War. John Heydon (10 September 1629 – c. 1667) was an English Neoplatonist occult philosopher, Rosicrucian, astrologer and attorney. He was born in "Green Arbour" (near the Old Bailey), London, and educated at Tardebigge, Worcestershire, among his mother's friends, where he studied Latin and Greek with a tutor and was apprenticed to the study of law. His studies were interrupted by the outbreak of the English Civil War, and as a young man, he was said to have served in the royalist army. In 1651 he went abroad, travelling to Italy, Spain, Egypt, Arabia, and Persia. On returning to England he trained in law, in 1655 he was practising as an attorney and also casting horoscopes at Clifford's Inn, he married the widow of Nicholas Culpeper in 1656, and is thought to have fathered a daughter. He attracted attention in royalist and occultist circles for predicting the future, including the death of Oliver Cromwell, then Protector. Their royalist connections caused both Francis and John Heydon to be imprisoned in the final years of the Commonwealth era. The Restoration of 1660 resolved Heydon's incarceration – though he was imprisoned briefly later in 1663 for dealing in suspect (treasonous) literature, and in 1664 for debt. In 1667, Heydon was imprisoned, again, in the Tower of London for his part in the treasonous plots of his patron, the Duke of Buckingham, though that he was innocent and was the victim of someone paid to inform against him. Heydon published a remarkable volume of work in the last twelve years of his life, though was accused of plagiarising Sir Thomas Browne, Thomas Vaughan, and other writers. He was referred to as "an ignoramus and a cheate" by Elias Ashmole; Frances Yates termed him a "strange character...an astrologer, geomancer, alchemist, of a most extreme type. The precise date of Heydon's death is unknown. A rare book, with 'Rare Book Hub' showing only 3 copies sold in the last century, at Sothebys in 1985, Henkels in 1920, and Maggs in 1919.

Constance Lytton: 'Prisons & Prisoners. Scarce first edition of the remarkable autobiography of the aristocratic suffragette Constance Lytton, recounting her remarkable masquerade and imprisonment as the working-class seamstress 'Jane Warton'.Lady Constance Georgina Bulwer-Lytton, to give her her full name, was the grand-daughter of the novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and although her family was very influential, she rejected completely her background and joined the WSPU. She was arrested four times, and under the name of Constance Lytton she was given preferential treatment and privileges; she was not forcilbly fed when she went on hunger strike, and was soon released. However, when she went to Liverpool under the name of 'Jane Warton', she was arrested, forcibly fed, and her health was permanently damaged.
