Having attended the Hornsea School of Art from the age 17, a change of family circumstances prevented her from advancing to the Academy School of Art. A contemporary of Margaret Tarrant and Eileen Soper she moved away from the Home Counties taking a position with the Nile Commission Press in Cairo providing illustrations for children's literature, returning to England for five years she was asked to return to Egypt taking employment with the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge. It is this work that made her name synonymous with Bible illustrations throughout the World.

A prisoner of war carved bone box containing dominoes, early 19th century, the sliding lid with two full length watercolour portrait miniatures of a gentleman and a lady of the period, sliding open to reveal 41 hand carved bone dominoes and a single cowrie shell with geometric arcaded decoration the sides and supported upon four pillar feet with pointed finials, height 5.5 cm width 19 cm depth 7 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The prisoner of war domino box has come from a good private source, ironically it was put aside for a Charity pile. The lid is in good condition throughout albeit rather tired and dirty but there are no obvious major faults. All finials in the box are intact and the feet again are intact, but note the two feet by the arched top both have the outward facing side smoothed off. I cannot tell whether this has been a repair or not but it is the same on both. The panel between these two back legs has a 6 mm and 3.5 cm fine split. On the same panel there is also a 2.5 cm section of edging missing. The opposing lower side has a 1 cm section by 6 mm section of the top right hand corner missing and a 1 cm section of the lower border missing. The colours throughout are very much faded but still visible. All in all a nice piece and in my opinion I can forgive the faults it has.
