F. FABRONI after THIMOMAKOS OF BYZANTIUM. Framed, signed, dated 1825 and inscribed verso, oil on paper laid on board, portrait of Cleopatra being bitten by an asp, housed in a Moroccan leather case. Thimomakos's original encaustic portrait of Cleopatra is believed to have been commissioned by Octavian Augustus in c. 30 B.C after her death. Emperor Hadrian then acquired it for his collection, where it remained in his villa, until being discovered in the ruins in 1818.
