Chattie Wake (19th/20th century): Portrait of a seated gentleman, oil on canvas, signed lower left, H 75 x W 45 cm. Note: Chattie Wake was the wife of the artist Michel Salaman (1879-1971), a great friend of Augustus John who he met when studying at the Slade. Unfortunately Salaman gave up painting as his talent did not compare to that of John's and, upon their marriage, he persuaded Chattie Wake to do the same. As their daughter, Merula Salaman, later Lady Guinness, wife of Sir Alec, wrote in a memoir: "He managed to stop her painting. Augustus John was the hero of his life, and no one should paint who wasn't a genius. He gave up himself when he left the Slade, and he couldn't bear to see Mummy continuing her work. He says he was jealous, because she was more talented than he, but I think he really couldn't stand her being content with her own modest gift with no ambition to be a great artist. It was a very destructive attitude." Chattie, the daughter of Colonel Edward Baldwin Wake of the 21st Hussars, was a descendant of Hereward the Wake; she too trained at the Slade.
