Circle of William Salter (British, 1804-1875),A three quarter length portrait of Henry Nicholetts (British, 1840-1856) in scarlet dress tunic,Oil on canvas (re-lined),Unsigned,58.5cm x 49.5cm,Gilt framedBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Henry Nicoletts was the younger brother of Lt Col Gilbert Nicholetts. At the age of fifteen he was appointed to the service of Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawack, and arrived in Borneo at the end of 1855. On the night of 18th February 1856, Brooke's house was attacked, and Henry left the bungalow where he was sleeping. Sir James Brooke wrote: 'Poor Harry Nicholetts! I mourn his fate. I was fond of him, for he was a gentle and amiable lad, promising well for the future. Suddenly awakened, he tried to make his way to the large house, and was killed in the attempt. His sword lay beside him next morning when he was found. Poor, poor fellow!' The background of the portrait, visible through the curtain on the right, is a close match to that in the portrait of Sir James Brooke by Sir Francis Grant, and may represent a form of posthumous tribute to Henry. CONDITION REPORT:Examination under UV shows evidence of restoration, including retouching and re-varnishing, probably carried out when the canvas was re-lined. The frame is structurally sound, but shows some cracking to the moulded details. The frame fits well but does not appear to be original to the painting.
