WW1 Royal Marine Light Infantry HMS Revenge Battle of Jutland Group of Three Medals. Awarded to “PLY 13886 PTE W.H. HOOPER RMLI”. Comprising: 1914/15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal ... Accompanied by an original postcard photographic portrait... plus a quantity of detailed research. Private William Henry Hooper a native of Durham enlisted into the RMLI in 1906, his trade being a cabinet maker. In 1908 he was serving onboard HMS Nibble and the following year HMS Suffolk. In December 1915 he was posted to Dreadnought HMS Revenge and served onboard her during the Battle of Jutland. Surviving the Battle he served in various shore establishments and transferred to the RNR in March 1919.

This fine quality portrait depicts the head and shoulders of a Company Officer, wearing scarlet coatee with mustard facings and gold bullion 1830 pattern Company Officers wings to the shoulders. To his shoulder belt can be found a gilt square plate. Mounted into an attractive oval gold coloured metal frame with floral decoration. The reverse with a lock of hair and initials. Height 6.5 cm
1798 Davison’s Nile Medal. This is a scarce example of the bronze medal,with later Victorian gilding. issued to ratings who were present at the Great Victory on the 1st August 1798. The obverse depicts the figure of peace caressing a shield embossed with a portrait of Lord Nelson. The reverse is decorated with a scene of the British Fleet at Aboukir Bay. The edged is with inscription from Alexander Davison. Polish to high points GC.

To the right shoulder a silver bullion epaulette. Mounted into an oval gold metal frame, the reverse with a lock of hair. Detail and colours good. Height 5cm. Circa 1790. The vendor states that the portrait is by descent of the family is a portrait of William Lambert of Woodmansterne

Royal Artillery 1847 Officer’s Commission. A scarce vellum example appointing Edgar Grantham Bredin Second Lieutenant on the 11th December 1847. Bearing the signature of Queen Victoria. Some age wear. Major Bredin in 1858 was serving with the Osmanli Horse Artillery. A portrait of him is held in the National Portrait Gallery. He died in 1873.
WW1 3rd Bn Notts & Derby Regiment Officer’s Ephemera. & Badges. A selection of items appertaining to Major Humphrey Howarth. Including: Photographs of groups ... Portrait photograph ... Record of Service ... Invitation to attend the funeral of King Edward VII ... etc. Overall GC Images clear ... The grouping is accompanied by Major Howarth’s OSD Cap Badge, with blades and quantity of uniform buttons and single collar badge. Major Humphrey Howarth was born in 1875 and was commissioned into the 3rd Devonshire Regiment in 1900 and in 1904 transferred to the 3rd Bn of the Notts & Derby Regiment. He served with the Battalion throughout the Great War.
WW1 5th Bde CFA, CEF Canadian Expeditionary Force 1916 Silver GRI Memorial Cross. Awarded to “86740 Bdr D.J. Davies”. This example by Caron Bros, Montreal, the reverse impressed STERLING ➂. Now fitted with a replacement ribbon. Polished GC. Bombardier David John Davies was a native of Aberystwyth and volunteered for service on the 29th December 1914, he had previously served 4 years with the Royal Field Artillery. He landed in France and was Killed in Action on the 3rd November 1916, whilst with the 5th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. On this day his Battery was 3 1/2 miles North East of Albert near Pozieres, during the night his gun pit received a direct hilt, killing him instantly. The Ceredigion Museum hold a portrait photograph of him.

Mounted into a gold coloured metal locket frame. Detail and colours remain very good. Height of oval 6cm Artist believed to be R.E. Arnold Circa 1791.

Railwayana - Local Interest - a printed certificate made to mark the retirement from service of the Midland Raiwlay art Derby of the locomotive superintendent, Samuel Waite Johnson, company arms at top, early 2-2-2 locomotive in cartouche at foot, on left side a portrait of Johnson superimposed over a view of his compound 4-4- 0 locomotive no. 1000 also in cartouche below, with text expressing esteem and with names of colleagues below in four columns: R. Marriott, 11 by 13in (28 by 33cm) in plain oak frame. Samuel Waite Johnson (1831-1912) was the son of James johnsopn, later loco superintendent on the Nortgh Staffordshire railway, and was born at Bramley Yorks and educated at Leeds Grammar School vbefore going to work with E B Wilson & Co. He was locomotive superintendent of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway to 1864, then to the Edinburgh and Glasgow to 1866, then to the Great Eastern to 1873, when he was appointed to the Midland Railway at Derby, retiring in 1903 and being succeeded by his assistant R M Deeley. He is famous for his successful Class 4 compound 4-4-0 express engines of which the rebuilt protoype No. 1000 is preserved. He died at Nottingham in 1912.
