Mauritz Drougge (Norwegian, 1874-1949)Black Grouse at the lek; Ptarmigan in autumn, a pair both signed 'Drougge' (lower right)oil on canvaseach 80.5 x 100.5cm (31 11/16 x 39 9/16in). (2)Footnotes:Mauritz Drougge was an animal, landscape and portrait painter born in Arendal on 5 July 1874. He is best known for the decoration of the inside of the Forestry Pavilion at the Jubilee Exhibition which took place to mark the centennial of the 1814 Constitution at Kristiana from May to October 1914. The location was in the grounds of Frogner Manor and the exhibition was visited by over 1.5 million people over six months. It is highly likely that Drougge would have been familiar with his contemporary, Bruno Liljefors, whose pioneering work embodied the change in wildlife art as it emerged from a scientific approach to a more realistic depiction of birds and animals in their natural environment. Drougge also combines Impressionistic brushstrokes and carefully observed realism to produce thoroughly fresh compositions that celebrate the natural behaviour of the birds. In the present lot, we see black grouse displaying at the lek in early spring, and the ptarmigan are shown in the high mountains in the late autumn; their plumage has begun to reveal traces of white which indicates the onset of winter. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Mary Ellen Best (British, 1809-1891)'Portrait of Frank, Caroline and Fred, November 1845' signed and dated 'Mary Ellen Sarg 1st November 1845' (lower right)watercolour heightened with gum arabic25.4 x 18.1cm (10 x 7 1/8in).Footnotes:ProvenanceThe family of the artist by descent. LiteratureCaroline Davidson, The World of Mary Ellen Best, London, Chatto & Windus Ltd., 1985, illustrated in colour p. 131, fig. 128.Mary Ellen Best was born in York, October 1809 to Dr Charles Best, a prominent Yorkshire physician, and Mary Norcliffe Dalton daughter or a Yorkshire landowner. Dr Best died when Mary Ellen was only eight, leaving her to be raised by her mother, who never remarried, and her two sisters. Inheritance from her mean that a good education was affordable and that she would not have to work for a living or marry for financial reasons, leaving adequate time to study painting both at Mrs. Haugh's school in Doncaster and later Miss Shepherd's school in Bromley. In 1828 Best returned to Yorkshire to embark on a career as a painter. Lot 31 is a sketch book dating from this period when Best was still learning here trade and taking every opportunity to practice, travelling throughout Yorkshire sketching landscapes, country houses and churches They are testament to the dedication shown by the young artist and a great marker for her progression.Best travelled extensively in Europe during her career, her first trip being in 1934 with her mother. Instead of following the well beaten track to Italy the pair travelled through Holland into Germany, stopping at Rotterdam along the way. The view of Rotterdam, lot 28, was likely either painted during the brief stay during this first trip or during her second foray onto the continent in 1938 when she spent two months exploring Holland, including a stay in Leyden as seen in lot 29. This second trip came after the death of Best's mother in March 1837. The inheritance Best received at this time meant she could live comfortably without having to sell to dealers or exhibit her work and afforded her the luxury of being able to travel as much as she pleased. Indeed, it is clear that Best enjoyed travelling, returning for a three month tour in June 1939 including a stay in Dusseldorf to paint the town's colourful costumes as seen in lot 27.It was late September in Dusseldorf, during this trip, that Best met her future husband, Johann Anton Phillip Sarg, a German schoolmaster and ambitious musician. In what appears to be whirlwind romance she left Dusseldorf a few weeks later engaged to marry, the wedding taking place on the 15th January 1840. The couple spent the early stages of the married life in Nuremburg and Frankfurt during which time they had three children Frank, Caroline and Fred. The family returned to England intermittently but lived mainly in Germany and Belgium. Mary Ellen Best died of pneumonia in Darmstadt in May 1891at the age of eighty-one. An appreciation of Best's watercolors is best supplemented by Caroline Davidson's comprehensive work on the artist's life and oeuvre (The World of Mary Ellen Best, Chatto & Windus Ltd., London, 1985) which features most of the present collection. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lionel Dalhousie Robertson Edwards, RI (British, 1878-1966)Foxhunter signed 'Lionel Edwards' (lower right)oil on canvas 50.8 x 61cm (20 x 24in).Footnotes:The present lot is a preparatory work for Lionel Edwards's portrait of Lieutenant Colonel Harry Llewellyn on Foxhunter. Sir Henry Morton Llewellyn bought Foxhunter in 1947 and the pair would go to win 78 international competitions in their joint career including three victories at the King George V Gold Cup at the International Horse Show in 1948, 1950 and 1953, they remain the only pair to win the event on three occasions. A stained hardwood, probably elm, commemorative portrait relief panel of Field Marshal Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, after Peter Rouw (1770-1852), circa 1820, the Duke portrayed in profile looking to sinister; the stained pine frame carved with laurel in relief, 40 x 32cm overall Arthur Wellesley was born in Dublin to the Earl and Countess of Mornington. Though he was an active politician and even served as Chief Secretary of Ireland and later Prime Minister during his lifetime, he is mainly remembered for his remarkable military achievements. Wellesley fought in Flanders in 1794 and subsequently directed a military campaign in India in 1796, for the success of which he was knighted upon his return to the UK. He was given the title Duke of Wellington in 1814, in the year before his most famous victory: the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. When he returned to England, he was honoured and celebrated as a national hero. The present relief was probably made in the years after this landmark victory. The choice of timber carries a wider significance. At a crossroads near the battlefield at Waterloo stood an elm tree, later nicknamed the 'Waterloo Elm', which had often served as a command post for the Duke. The tree died at the hands of souvenir hunters in the years after the battle, and was subsequently turned into furniture and objects, including a chair by Thomas Chippendale the Younger which was presented to King George IV and still remains in the Royal Collection. John Children, an entrepreneurial librarian at the British Museum, acquired the felled tree to sell its wood for the manufacture of further objects. It is possible that the panel is connected to this thriving souvenir market for commemorative objects in (Wellington's) elm.A similar relief, only carved in oak, is in the collection of the National Army Museum, NAM. 2000-07-119-1.
