λ John Smart (1741-1811) Portrait miniature of Baron Crewe, head and shoulders, wearing a green coat and waistcoat Signed with initials and dated 1781 Oval, in later gold and gilt metal frame 47 x 34mm Provenance: The Crewe Family, Scotland By the time this portrait of John Crewe, 1st Baron Crewe was painted in 1781 Crewe, who was born in 1742, was a seasoned politician and MP for Cheshire, a position he held for 34 years. He was best known for Crewe~s Act, passed in 1782 which prevented customs officers and post office officials from voting in an effort to prevent corruption. Crewe was painted by Pompeo Batoni whilst on his Grand Tour and later in life he sat for Thomas Lawrence. ++Good condition

He and his wife were somewhat unconventional Quakers but also great lovers and patrons of the arts - filling their home, Woodhill House in Montenotte, Cork with Irish and Continental art. He was President of The Artist~s Fund Society and became a member of The Society of Arts in 1804. He is best known for his development of steel plates for engraving and received a Gold medal in 1823 by the Society of Arts for this work ++Relined, restored, in fair restored condition

Her great grandfather was Edward Bligh (1797-1872) who was the brother-in-law of Helena Paterson/Bligh who became the second wife of the sitter~s son, William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, 4th Earl of Mornington (1788-1857) Private English Collection Private St. Louis Collection, USA who donated in 1970s to: The H. Leslie Perry Library, Henderson, North Carolina Private English Collection William Wellesley-Pole was the brother of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and Richard Colley Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley. He was an Anglo-Irish politician and in 1821 was created 1st Baron Maryborough. He held various offices including Master of the Mint and Postmaster-General, he was also Clerk of the Ordnance around the time of the Battle of Trafalgar. On his death in 1845 his son William inherited his titles. Both Wellesley-Pole~s brothers had portraits painted by Lawrence.

This miniature seems to be based on the portrait etching of her by Antoine-Jean-Baptiste Coupé
