DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. A.L.S., Charles Dickens, one page, 8vo, Gloster Place, Hyde Park Gardens (although on the printed stationery of Gad's Hill Place, Higham by Rochester, Kent), 16th May 1864, to W. P. Frith. Dickens sends his correspondent a requisition (no longer present) which he explains is self-explanatory and 'will require 20 signatures', and also remarks 'Do you feel a sufficient interest in such a principle, to authorize me to add yours to it?', concluding 'You can tell me on Wednesday, and then give it me back'. With blank integral leaf. Some extremely light, minor staining at the corners, not affecting the text or signature, VG William Powell Frith (1819-1909) English Painter, a friend of Dickens whose portrait he painted in 1859.

MILNE A. A.: (1882-1956) English Author, creator of Winnie-the-Pooh. A fine A.Q.S., A. A.Milne, one page, 8vo, Mallord Street, Chelsea, 20th February 1929. Milne's attractively penned quotation is titled When We Very Young in his hand and represents the first poem in his book of poetry, in full, 'Corner-of-the-Street Down by the corner of the street/ Where the three roads meet/ And the feet/ Of the people as they pass go “Tweet-tweet-tweet”-/ Who comes tripping round the corner of the street?/ One pair of shoes which are Nurses's/ One pair of slippers which are Percy's-/ Tweet! Tweet! Tweet!' Signed and inscribed by Milne at the foot of the quotation. Neatly mounted and matted in cream alongside a modern postcard portrait of Milne accompanied by his son, Christopher Robin, and Winnie the Pooh. 11 x 14 overall. Autograph Quotations by Milne are both extremely rare and desirable. With a slight tear to the right edge, professionally repaired, and not affecting the text or signature. About VG When We Very Young was published in 1924 and featured illustrations by Ernest Shepard. The best selling book of poetry requires the reader to imagine that the narrator may be Christopher Robin, and the 38th poem in the book, entitled Teddy Bear (which was first published in Punch in February 1924), represents the first appearance of Winnie-the-Pooh.

The only trophy I ever won was a cup donated by an American family for "promotion of international understanding". I and a friend acted a play about a cannibal and a missionary in the Fiji islands. Nowadays it would probably be considered racist.'), Peter Barkworth, John Brabourne, Raymond Briggs, Fiona Bruce, Lord Carrington (in part, 'When I was sixteen years old, my father asked me what I wanted to do later in life. "I don't know" I said. "In that case, you had better go into the Army" he replied. My housemaster....nodded his head approvingly. "There are only three careers in which a really stupid boy can make a success: the Army, farming and stockbroking". I have never been a stockbroker!'), Nicky Clarke, Jilly Cooper (in part, 'My mother was.....gloriously eccentric, but sometimes slightly embarrassing. She loathed the pink and grey school uniform so much, particularly the summer dresses, that she sent me to school on sports day, in a blue silk dress with a white collar from Harrods, because she thought it was so much prettier.....'), Wendy Craig, Edwina Currie (in part, 'I spent much of my time in secondary school at The Cavern....we used to slope off....& bop the lunch hour away....Cilla Black was the cloakroom attendant & would nag all the groups to let her sing....Of course all the groups played, including The Beatles.....'), Judi Dench, Susan Hampshire, Patricia Hodge, Douglas Hurd, Lesley Joseph, Neil Kinnock, Robin Knox-Johnston (in part, 'I had put in some maths prep and sadly, when it was returned it had more red ink on it than it should. But I was a fearful swot and knew that I could be top of history and art every time. R. Plewman (Canadian section), First Edition published by R. C. Barnum Co., H. L. Balddwin Pub. Co., F. B. Dickerson Co., Imperial Pub. The Autographed Edition features a sepia printed frontispiece portrait of Billy Bishop, with printed text below, signed ('W A Bishop') by Bishop in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area of the lower border. Speer was found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment at the Nuremberg Trials, principally for the use of forced labour. Signed First Day Cover issued to commemorate Harry S. Truman and featuring an attractive design including Truman's portrait. Postmarked at Independence, Missouri and dated 8th May 1973. Bold blue ink signature ('W S Churchill') on a page contained in a small autograph album, also including a small number of other signatures by a variety of other famous individuals including Baron Moran (1882-1977, English Doctor, Churchill's personal physician), Baron Layton (1884-1966, British Economist), Peter Churchill (1909-1972, British Special Operations Executive officer of World War II), Violet Bonham Carter (1887-1969, British Politician & Diarist, one of Churchill's closest female friends), R. E. Mortimer Wheeler (1890-1976, British Archaeologist) etc. Also including a printed 4to programme signed by entertainer Gracie Fields to the front cover, featuring her portrait, and a postcard photograph of Fields bearing a facsimile signature. G to VG, 2 + album Provenance: The signature of Churchill was obtained in person by the vendor at the Town Hall on Ramsden Street in Huddersfield in 1951 when Churchill gave a speech in support of Violet Bonham Carter who was standing as the Liberal candidate for Colne Valley in the General Election of 1951.
