September 24th 1917. It is also inscribed on an old label with the name “Van Dyke”.
F...Lindo (fl.1755-1765) Portrait of Lady Elizabeth Seymour, 1st Duchess of Northumberland, Standing, Full Length on a Balcony, Wearing a Gown with a Scarlet and Ermine Robe] Signed and dated "1765", also inscribed with the sitter's name and the artist together with the date on a plaque attached to the frame, oil on canvas, 76.5cm by 62cm (30in by 24 1/2in) *The picture is sold together with various documentation and letters from Alnwick Castle, Northumberland and a further letter from the Greater London Council, both dated 11th March 1970 and 23rd March 1970 respectively. The letter written by the Duke of Northumberland refers to the present portrait being a copy of the 1st Duchess of Northumberland by Sir Joshua Reynolds which is at Syon. The artist F. Lindo is thought to have originated from Isleworth, he painted a good many portraits in Lowland Scotland and in Aberdeenshire between 1760 and 1762, both head and shoulder studies and small scale pictures as well as full length portraits. He might have been a pupil of Francis Hayman (c.1708-1776). *The Duchess of Northumberland, here seen in ceremonial robes, is Elizabeth Seymour, the only surviving child of the Duke of Somerset; she married Hugh, 1st Duke of Northumberland in 1740. Attributed to Robert Cauer (the Younger): A Bronze Figure Group of a Young Boy and Girl], standing in conversation on a canted rectangular plinth, signed, 42.5cm *Robert Cauer the Younger (1863-?) was born at Kreuznach in 1863, the son and pupil of Karl Cauer. He studied in Rome and spent three years (1889-92) working in the United States, where he produced numerous portrait reliefs and busts. From 1893 onwards he worked in Kreuznach and Berlin. Alan Lowndes 1921-1978 portrait of william sydney graham signed and dated 1960 oil on canvas laid down on board 75.5x50cm.; 29.75x19.75in. William Sydney Graham (1918-1986) poet was born in Greenock Scotland but moved to St Ives Cornwall where he became great friends with Lowndes and was his most regular drinking partner.
Dame Elisabeth Frink D.B.E. R.A. 1930-1993 portrait of Ben Bernstein signed and numbered 2 bronze with dark brown patina height (including base): 42cm.; 16.5in. Sir Eduardo Paolozzi 1924-2005 maria painted plaster (after a model kit) on a wood and plaster base height (including base) 45.5cm.; 18in. Maria was the robotic 'heroine' of Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis' (1927) one of the artist's favourite films. In the 1990s Paolozzi made several variant portrait studies of her in plaster and bronze. A bronze Artist's Copy and a plaster and wood version of the sculpture are in the sculptor's estate.
John Vanderbank (1694-1739) Thomas Hamilton 6th Earl of Haddington (1680-1735) of Tyninghame House East Lothian Hereditary Keeper of Holyrood Park oil on canvas 126 x 100cm His wife the Countess sister of the Earl of Hopetoun died in 1768. His descendant married 4th Baron Lilford in 1885 and she was responsible for the renovation and recasting of Lilford - hence this portrait hanging in pride of place in the entrance hall in 1942.
