A Third Reich Luftschutz wooden first aid box, 17” x 12” x 5”, painted grey, the lid stencilled “Tier Luftschutzkasten 39”, the inside of the lid with label listing contents, etc, and containing an instruction leaflet, badges etc; a Luftschutz ribbed steel gasmask container; a large framed portrait photograph of an SS man; a Gehilfenbrief dated 1940; a specimen set of 3 German issue Polish stamps with Radom postmark for 26/10/40; 5 various photographs and postcards; 1 other item and a .177” German Diana Mod 15 tinplate airgun. Five: 1939-45 star, Atlantic star with France and Germany clasp; Italy star, Defence and War (un-named as issued), VF. The group awarded to Bernard Jordan RN, with a black and white photograph of Lieutenant Jordan, in uniform showing the above ribbons. This lot accompanied by the following items: portrait on canvas, signed Graham Clarke 6th May 2014, framed, 17” x 21¼”; a good quality coloured print of a “Bob” cartoon from The Sunday Telegraph 8th June 2014 showing Mr. Jordan astride Steve McQueen’s motorcycle clearing barbed wire as in the film “The Great Escape”, 11¼” x 9¼”; an “Older People’s Day” award named to Bernard Jordan 2014 as presented by the Mayor of Brighton & Hove; a Special Award to acknowledge “Faithfully Served 34 Years as a Local Councillor, May 1999”; a glass “Pegasus” paperweight as supplied by a veterans charity; a Normandy 2014 Anniversary Diploma named to Bernard Jordan, numbered 1131 with its numbered pin back badge; various charity lapel and other badges and a small package of mugs, ephemera relating to his visit to Normandy and of his birthday a few days later; an Honorary Alderman certificate for Brighton & Hove 17th July 2014; a copy of a hand written letter addressed to Prime Minister Gordon Brown in which he states that he served “on a Royal Navy Tank landing ship which was in the first wave ashore on D-Day in Normandy”; and his Brittany Ferries return trip ticket confirmation printouts 5/6th June 2014. Plate 2 Note: Bernard Arthur John Jordan, joined the Royal Navy aged 17 in 1941 as an electrician within the ranks of the Marine Engineering Artificers. He later gave enthusiastic service to the local council and served as Mayor 1995/6. He won the hearts of the nation with his determined trip to the Normandy 70th Anniversary, when, failing to secure a seat on the British Legion coach, he decided to “go it alone” without telling anyone but his wife. The nursing home raised a missing person alarm and local hospitals, stations etc were contacted before a fellow veteran told police he was safe and well in Normandy, this earning him the nickname “The Great Escaper” in the British national press. A few days later this plucky veteran celebrated his 90th birthday and received over 2,500 cards, gifts and good wishes from as far afield as Australia, Afghanistan and the USA. He died on 30th December 2014, his wife following 7 days later.

A SET OF FIVE BRITISH COLONIAL EMPIRE POSTERS 'Oue Allies in the Colonies', the portrait of a soldier from each of the Cyprus Regiment, Kings Own Malta Regiment, the Kings Africa Rifles, the Royal West African Frontier Force, Ceylon Garrison Artillery franked to each side are the names of the colonial nations, printed in England by A. C. Ltd., and each approximately 100cm x 62cm (5)
