AMERICAN SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH MID-19TH CENTURY engraved to one side with the figure of Liberty depicted with the cap of Liberty and a star and spangled shield, the reverse engraved with a portrait of a lady with a riding whip, copied from an image displayed in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, 1858, of a lady's 'Equestrian Costume' 13cm high Note: Scrimshaw artists of the 19th century regularly used both patriotic figures and images published in the popular press as sources for their work. It is thought that this depiction of Liberty was taken from the newspaper 'Gleason’s Weekly Line-of-Battle Ship', which featured this image of the goddess alongside Justice. The portrayal of the lady to the other side was taken from Harper's New Monthly Magazine; a common source used by whalemen during the 19th century. Literary and political figures, as well as fashion-plates, were also regularly depicted on whale's teeth. Note: Please be aware that this lot contains material which may be subject to import/export restrictions, especially outside the EU, due to CITES regulations. FINE PAIR OF LARGE 26-BORE SILVER MOUNTED DOUBLE BARREL FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS BY ROBERT WOGDON, LONDON CIRCA 1790 each with 12 inch long re-browned twist sighted double barrels engraved with a band of beadwork and gold line at the breech, with gold touch holes, engraved grooved tang, and flat bevelled bolted back-curved locks, with semi rain-proof pans, each signed 'WOGDON' and secured by one screw through the lock-plate, with figured dark walnut half-stocks and swelling flat-sided butts with cast silver plaques of Minerva, engraved silver trigger-guards with pineapple finials, silver shield escutcheons engraved with the crest of a Scottish boar's head surmounted by the motto VIET VERTU TE ('By strength and valour') for Baird of Newbyth (by Haddington), with a single silver ramrod-pipe in the form of a double pineapple, silver barrel bolt escutcheons and silver-tipped replacement ramrods, in an original mahogany case with flush fitting brass D-shaped handle engraved with a boar's head crest, lined with light green baize with loading rods, later pistol flask with engraved crest, main spring cramp, turnscrews and bullet mould leather flint case (2) 12 inch/ 31cm barrels Note: General Sir David Baird (1757-1829) of Newbyth, Haddington was born in 1757, and joined the army in 1772 at the age of 15. He served in 73rd/71st Highlanders, during the end of the 18th century and purchased the rank of Lt. Colonel on a visit to London in 1789, during the period that these pistols were built. He returned to command his regiment in India the following year. (General Sir David Baird Biography, chapter VI, page 73) We know from his biography that Captain Dalrymple wrote to David Baird at Newbyth to order horses to go, posthaste, to Horse Guards to purchase his new rank. To obtain his commission he required an agent and money. Agents in 1790 were based in Charing Cross and Whitehall (Horse Guards) a short walk from 2 Haymarket the premises of Robert Wogdon the renowned maker of precision duelling pistols. Wogdon was so well regarded that a stanza was written about him by an Irish volunteer that read: 'Hail Wogdon patron of that leaden death'. The silver mounts on these pistols are not hallmarked and the barrels bear no proof marks, which was a money-saving scheme adopted by Wogdon: if the pistols were bound for India he could save on the assay and proof fees by not submitting them. Knowing he was returning to India, it is very likely Baird decided to arm himself with a pair of double barrelled pistols by this renowned maker. By 1799 he had become a renowned Scottish soldier with the rank of Major General and led the attack on Tipu Sultan at Seringapatam. A full length portrait of David Baird by Sir David Wilkie hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. Literature: Hook, T. E., The Life of General, The Right Honourable Sir David Baird, Bart G.C.B. K.C. &c. &c. (R. Bentley, 1832, London); The National Gallery of Scotland, The Tiger and the Thistle: Tipu Sultan and the Scots in India 1760-1800 Exhibition Catalogue, 29 July-3 October 1999.
