Portrait of Lady Blessington Attributed to Count D'Orsay Mid 19th century oil on board. 20.5 x 17 cm Hand written paper label with attribution on reverse. Also R.Davy, Colourman to Artists, 83 Newman Street, London label on reverse. Note: Margaret Power, born Ireland 1789 into small landowning family, escaped an early tyrannical marriage and married the wealthy Earl of Blessinton in 1818 after which she established herself as one of London's leading socialites. The Blessingtons were intimates with all strands of fashionable society, politics and the arts. Disreali, Palmerston, and Lawrence were all frequent visitors. Byron became a friend during their European travels and in 1834 she published "Conversations with Lord Byron." In 1818 she first met and became intimate with the French amateur artist and dandy Alfred Grimod d'Orsay, the son of a Bonapartist general. After her husband died in 1829 they set up home together along with her step-daughter to whom D'Orsay was legally married. However, their extravagance left them bankrupt and in 1849 D'Orsay fled to Paris followed soon after by Lady Blessington who died within weeks of her arrival. The heartbroken Count was dependent on his friend Prince Louis Napoleon and painting portraits for money. He died in 1852.
