SEYMOUR (GEORGE DUDLEY) William F. Hopson and His Bookplates, No. 52 from an edition of 100 on Victorian paper signed by William Hopson and the Author, 6 plates, original quarter parchment with decorative boards, paper label, slightly grubby, 4to, Privately Printed, Washington, 1929. This copy includes an autograph inscription on headed notepaper from William Hopson to Charles and Ada Sherborn, mounted on the front f.e.p., plus 2 ALS from Hopson to them on the front paste-down. Loose inside are further examples of Hopson's engravings: 8 sheets of printed illustrations, 13 proof pp. (6 duplicates in red), and another proof portrait of a girl on tissue. There is a copy of Hopson's obituary in the New York Herald Tribune in 1935 on the rear paste-down. Hopson wrote several papers on the design of bookplates, including an "Appreciation" of his friend Charles William Sherborn, the English engraver and designer of bookplates. Included in this Lot is a Ms. poetry book (a bit rubbed but nicely-bound) that belonged to Charles Sherborn's mother, which Charles has used to record record "An Index of bookplates engraved by C.W. Sherborn" between 1860-1908. Also included is A History of the Family of Sherborn by Charles' son, one of 250 copies, contemp. tree calf, rebacked, 1901. This is interleaved with further genealogical details. Plus the Ms. for this history, a bound copy of photographed documents, and 2 other 19th c. Ms. items. LOCATION CABINET
