* WILLIAM MACDONALD (SCOTTISH 1883 - 1960) HOUSES AT RONDA oil on canvas, signedframedimage size 55cm x 45cm, overall size 79cm x 69cmProvenance: exhibited Royal Scottish Academy 1928 no 168.Note: William Macdonald was an Edinburgh painter who had trained in Paris and Madrid. He was a close friend of Cadell and Peploe and was a well established figure on the Edinburgh art scene by the early years of the 20th century. In 1925 he married fellow artist Beatrice Huntington and the couple settled in Edinburgh in 1928. Their gracious New Town flat in Hanover Street remaining their home for the rest of their lives. It housed a collection of paintings by both artists as well as works by their friends and contemporaries. Cadell painted a now well-known portrait of Macdonald (Portrait of a Man in Black) in the early to mid-twenties. He depicted his sitter as a smart and debonair character and by all accounts Macdonald was a stylish and handsome individual, at complete ease in any company. Macdonald's particular affinity for the arid landscapes of southern Spain had earned him the nickname William 'Spanish' Macdonald. Beatrice shared his love of travel and together they explored the Continent, returning frequently to the French Riviera and to southern Spain, choosing as their base the picturesque Mediterranean fishing village of Cassis in the South of France where they sometimes stayed with Samuel Peploe and his family. Kirkcudbright was another favoured location and they visited regularly staying with Jessie M King and EA Taylor. Macdonald often focussed on the juxtaposition of human architecture with monumental nature and "Houses at Ronda" reflects this with large trees in the foreground and imposing buildings behind. Like several Scottish artists before and after him, he appears to have had what we might nowadays describe as "environmental concerns". His broad brush strokes and strong compositional structure show colourist influences and yet Macdonald had a style which was distinctly his own. The Macdonalds spent much of the World War II years in Canada allowing them to continue to paint. Both William and Beatrice exhibited widely both at home and abroad throughout their lives.

A cadet Bourbon branch, the House of Orléans, then ruled for 18 years (1830–1848), until it too was deposed.Louis Philippe Joseph, Duc de Orléans (1747–1793), known as 'Philippe Égalité' and Louise Marie Adélaïde Penthièvre (1753-1821) were married at the Palace of Versailles in 1769. At the time of their marriage, Marie Adélaïde was the wealthiest heiress in France. The couple were much in love and had three sons and twin daughters but during the Reign of Terror, the couple were torn apart and the fate of their family was cast into peril. After a long period in exile, their eldest child, Louis Philippe (1773-1850) would eventually become the penultimate monarch of France (1830-1848), but not before his two younger brothers contracted tuberculosis while imprisoned with their father at Fort-Saint-Jean in Marseille. Their father was guillotined in 1793 and their mother exiled to Spain. Louis Antoine (1775-1807) and Louis Charles (1779–1808) later died of their condition within a year of each other - Louis Antoine while in exile in England and Louis Charles while visiting Malta.Their sister, Françoise, died in 1782, aged four and was survived by her younger twin, Louise Marie Adélaïde Eugénie (1777–1847). Once King, Louis Philippe came to rely heavily on his sister's intelligence, wisdom and loyalty, consulting her daily on both family matters and affairs of state. Raised a liberal by her governess, 'Madame Adélaïde' supported the idea of a constitutional monarchy and a representative government. Louis Philippe's reign, known as the 'July Monarchy', was dominated by wealthy industrialists and bankers. He promoted friendship with Great Britain and sponsored colonial expansion, notably the French conquest of Algeria. His popularity faded as economic conditions in France deteriorated. Madame Adélaïde died two months before his abdication on 24th February 1848. Louis Philippe spent the remainder of his life in exile in England. His supporters were known as Orléanists. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: Y ФY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.Ф This lot contains or is made of ivory and cannot be imported into the USA or any country within the EU.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Colombari et autres voyageurs de l’Orient du XIXe au debut du XXe siècle', Salle Drouot, 19 June 1981While Colombari himself did not identify the sitters in his inscription, they have since been identified as the Swedish physician Dr Conrad Gustav Fagergren and the American missionary Joseph Gallup Cochran, which suggests the double portrait was executed in late 1847 when both of them had just arrived in Tehran. Conrad Gustav Fagergren was a physician who after various adventures ended up in Persia, first working in Tehran for the Shah and then in Shiraz for the local governor. Joseph Gallup Cochran was a Presbyterian minister, sent as a missionary to Persia. Both men remained in the country for the rest of their lives. Franz Colombari was born to Austrian parents in Smyrna and after a military career, which he managed to combine with his artistic interests and friendships, he eventually moved to Paris where he spent the last decades of his life.

ANDERS GUSTAF ANDERSSON (SWEDISH 1780 - 1833)A miniature portrait of Admiral Ismael GibraltarWatercolour on ivory, 7.5 x 6.5cmIndistinctly signed and dated 1818Inscribed on a panel (partially cut) verso indistinctly 'Ism.., Killed at Navar (Navarino)'Ismael Gibraltar was an Ottoman admiral and emissary to Muhammad Ali, pasha and viceroy of Egypt. Active during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829), Ali gave Gibraltar command of the Egyptian squadron which joined the fleet of Nasuhzade Ali Pasha. Before the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence, Gibraltar was sent on diplomatic missions as Ali’s representative. One of his missions took him to Sweden, which, though not officially documented, is likely to have been when Anders Gustaf Andersson (1780-1833) had the chance to create this portrait in 1818; another Swedish portraitist, Johan Gustaf Sandberg, also created a miniature portrait of Gibraltar between 1817-1819.Having trained and worked as a professional painter, Andersson had turned to miniature portrait painting five years into his painting career under the guidance of Lorentz Svensson Sparrgren. Influences from Domenico Bossi, an Italian miniature portraitist highly regarded in Sweden, are clearly visible in Andersson’s work. There is no verified account of Gibraltar’s death – it has been attributed both to disease and military encounters. The panel at the back of the portrait is inscribed faintly with ‘Killed in Navar’ which may refer to a naval engagement, the Battle of Navarino, which took place on 20th October 1827. This battle saw the decimation of Turkish and Egyptian troops by the Greeks who were allied with Britain, Russia, and France. As an Ottoman admiral, it is entirely plausible that Gibraltar was killed at this battle, however, no official record exists.Kitty Astor, 2023
