Sir Charles John Holmes, British 1868-1936- "The Castle Waters"; oil on canvas, signed indistinctly and dated 1925, 51x61cm Provenance: with the New English Art Club, Spring Gardens Gallery W1, Spring/Summer 1926 where purchased for £126, the original receipt accompanies this lot. Note: In 1900 Holmes began exhibiting with the NEAC, he began co-editor of the Burlington Magazine in 1903 and then took up a position of Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford. In 1909 he became director of the National Portrait Gallery a position he held until 1916 when he moved to become director of the National Gallery. He was knighted in 1921.

Note: The originator of this work was active in the circle of the American artist Toby Edward Rosenthal (1848-1917), who was resident in Germany for most of his career and part of the Munich School.

A scarce 1930s, A Tooth & Co, Bretby Art Pottery musical portrait jug, modelled by Jesse Warren, as the head and neck of King Edward VIII, wearing the uniform of Colonel-in-Chief of the Welsh Guards, the ivory body with matte glaze, stylised E handle, the underside impressed - Bretby. The base is fitted with music box playing 'God Save The King', 21cm high (An identical example was owned by The Duke of Windsor and sold by Sotheby's in 1997)
