Note: In 1900 Holmes began exhibiting with the NEAC, he began co-editor of the Burlington Magazine in 1903 and then took up a position of Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford. In 1909 he became director of the National Portrait Gallery a position he held until 1916 when he moved to become director of the National Gallery. He was knighted in 1921.
