George Leader (British, active circa 1792-1804), a George III boxwood portrait bust of the Right Honourable Charles James Fox (1749-1806), dated 1797, the wigged sitter portrayed facing slightly to dexter, with drapery surrounding the truncation, on a waisted rectangular section socle, inscribed G LEADER 1797 to rear, 14.5cm high overallProvenance: likely the bust included in Sotheby's London, 8-9 December 1988, lot 301Literature: Diane Bilbey and Marjorie Trusted, British Sculpture 1470-2000, Victoria and Albert Museum, 2002, p. 93Reference to a bust by George Leader is also made in John Ingamells, National Portrait Gallery: Mid-Georgian Portraits 1760-1790, National Portrait Gallery, 2004, in which it is listed as a known portrait of Fox.Charles James Fox was one of the most prominent whig statesmen of his time, perhaps most remembered for his anti-slavery campaigning and his support of the French Revolution and the American patriots. His arch rivalry with prime minister William Pitt the Younger is also well recorded.George Leader is recorded as a wax modeller with a workshop at 188 Oxford Street, London. He is said to have exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1792-1804. He may be related to P. H. Leader, also a wax modeller. A relief by the latter sculptor, also executed in boxwood, is in the collection of the V&A, London, accession number A.24-1939.Condition Report: The bust bears the usual minor marks commensurate with age, and the boxwood has naturally patinated to include lighter and darker areas.there is an old split running down the left shoulder (circa 2-3cm long), and another, shorter, to the lowermost edge of the socle. There are more shallow surface scratches to the rear of the socle, one possibly a hairline crack. There is a small, old chip to the rear drapery. Overall this bust is in perfectly presentable condition.Condition Report Disclaimer

Some old repairs.Good original surface, a pleasant rich colour and patina. A high quality example of its type. The legs, rear panels, drawer Linings are original. The key is lacking. The main door lock is a period replacement as there is a fillet of timber adjacent.Additional concentrated scratching and some dark staining to the top. The drawers are all lined with stuck down paperOne carved petal element to the top of me front leg is detached and lacking. Some elements of the brass gallery are mishapen and several of the leaf Terminals of the gallery are lacking. The central panel of the right hand door is warped to a degree, causing a 'crease' towards the centre but no obvious split. Condition Report Disclaimer

Los 87

An Italian patinated bronze portrait bust of Julius Caesar, after the Antique, later 19th century, possibly Chiurazzi, Naples, portrayed truncated and facing forwards, on an integral waisted circular socle, 55cm high, 25cm wideThis bust is likely derived from the Roman Chiaramonti Portrait bust (in the Vatican Museums), which is one of only two accepted portrait busts of Caesar. The bust represents a grave and idealised leader, and may have been created posthumously during the reign of Augustus in the 1st century BC, when Caesar was widely admired.
