English School (c.1637), (SH) PORTRAIT OF JOHN HOLLES, 1ST EARL OF CLARE, THREE-QUARTER LENGTH STANDING, IN A RED COAT WITH COLLAR, BLACK CAP, ONE HAND RESTING ON A SWORD HILT, THE OTHER HOLDING A STICK Inscribed and painted with a coat of arms, oil on canvas 113 x 91cm Provenance: Probably from the collection of Baron Pelham of Stanmer, created Earl of Chichester, Stanmer Park, Sussex; Bonhams, London, 1986. The Pelham Holles family were Dukes of Newcastle, one of them becoming prime minister. This portrait was at Welbeck Abbey, then Stanmer Park. Sir John Holles raised troops against the Armada (illustrated top right). This was at Welbeck Abbey. His character, style, person and virtues are described in a long inscription painted on the back. CONDITION REPORT: relined, no inscription verso - on the front either side of the portrait, visible overpainting throughout - some old tears and holes have been filled to the left of the sitter. Inscription could possibly be on the original canvas under the relining.

A Naval Valentine, the rectangular black and white portrait of naval officer within a shell and beadwork decorated surround, inscribed "Souvenir", the outer painted border in blue, red and white, with anchors and an estuary scene with boats in harbour CONDITION REPORTS Wear, dirt and discolouration. Cracks. Some of the decoration is loose and falling off and some areas appear to be missing. Blue 'pipecleaner' type decoration with deterioration and losses. Total size (including frame) approx 25.5cm x 34.5cm.
