Circle of Jean Baptiste van Loo: Portrait of King Stanislaw I, King of Poland and Duc de Lorraine (1677-1766), French 18th century oval oil on canvas in contemporary gilt frame 70x57cms. King Stanislaw I was twice King of Poland and Duc de Lorraine in later life where he was instrumental in the development of Nancy as the provincial capital. His portrait was painted by French court painters including Jean-Baptiste Van Loo (1684-1745) and Antoine Pesne (1683-1757) and his daughter married Louis XV reigning as Queen of France 1725-1768. Provenance; purchased in the early 20th century from a Chateau near Nancy and thence by family descent.
