F. Gio: Gioseppe di S. Teresa Carmelitano Scalzo. PARTE PRIMA. [PARTE SECONDA].- In Roma: Nella Stamperia di Antonio de Rossi, 1698- 2 partes em 1 vol.: il.; 29 cm.- E., Fr. João José de Santa Teresa (1658- ca. 1733), whose secular name was João de Noronha Freire, was born in Lisbon and left for Rome in 1678, where he joined the Order of Discalced Carmelites. The work, subsidized with 5,000 Cruzados by King D. Pedro II of Portugal, describes the conflicts that occurred in Brazil in the 17th century, until the end of the Dutch occupation of the Northeast, which had its epilogue with the Pernambuco Insurrection (1654). Borba de Moraes considers it «One of the most sumptuous works published in the seventeenth century on a Brazilian subject». The copy, treated and carefully washed and glued, but complete and very clean, retains the two original cover pages (one on each part), dated 1698. The publisher and printer Antonio de Rossi had a new cover made in 1700, which he began to insert into the still existing copies. The collation of each of the parts is as follows: Part prima - [12], 232, [16] p.: 1 allegorical frontispiece, portrait of King D. Pedro II and 15 engravings and unfolded maps; Part two - 211, [21] p.: portrait of King D. João IV and 8 engravings and unfolded maps. + 1 vol. de atlas.- E., Jean-François de Galaup, count of La Pérouse (1741-1788), officer of the French Navy, born in Albi, was chosen by Louis XVI to command the famous expedition around the world, whose objective was to complete the discoveries of Captain James Cook in the Pacific Ocean. The expedition, made up of 220 men and the frigates La Boussole and L'Astrolabe, left Brest on August 1, 1785 but, following a storm off the islands of Vanikoro (Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon's Archipelago, in Melanesia), in July 1788, the two ships sank, losing almost the entire crew. On April 22, 1791, a decree from the French National Assembly ordered the publication of the expedition report, with General Louis Marie de Milet de Mureau (1751-1825) in charge of writing it. Original edition, consisting of four volumes of text and one atlas, with the following collation. Tome premier: [4], LXXII, 346 p.: 1 portrait; Take second: [4], 398, [1, 1 br.] p.; Take troisieme: [4], 422, [1, 1 br.] p.; Take quatrieme: [4], 309, [1 br.] p; [atlas volume]: 1 portrait, 1 engraved allegorical title, 69 engravings and maps. Of the 69 engravings in the atlas, 29 are mostly fold-out maps, some large, with occasional tears in the folds in the larger ones, without lack of support. The rest represent, above all, uses and customs of the people of the Northwest of the South Pacific (Melanesia). Slightly cropped, but very clean volumes of text; engravings and atlas maps equally clean and well folded, uncropped, preserving all the original margins intact. Recent bindings, with patina, ornamental gold border on the covers and smooth spines decorated in gold, the manner of the period. Brunet, III, coll. 828. Sabin, 38960.

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). Manuscript letter dictated & signed by Napoleon, addressed to General Clarke, Minister of War, 28 November 1813. This important piece of correspondence sheds new light on the intended breaking of capitulations, giving the order that "the soldiers returning with Marshal Saint-Cyr will serve." The letter reveals Napoleon's inner thought processes at subterfuge, attempting to trick the Coalition during an exchange of soldiers - something the Coalition forces rightly suspected. It is one of Napoleon's last letters before abdication and exile. Neatly clerk-written by Claude-François de Méneval [Napoleon's private secretary] on four sides of two leaves, 23 x 18.5cm (when folded), the paper bearing a French Imperial Eagle watermark. The addendum and calculations are both in Napoleon's hand. The letter has been researched for the vendor by the Fondation Napoléon, and copies of email correspondence between the vendor and François Houdecek are included. The letter has now been documented & published in the 14th volume of the Correspondance générale de Napoléon, edited by the Fondation Napoléon [37313]. Also included is a transcript of the letter (French & English) with footnotes to explain the historical context of key phrases. Purchased by the vendor from Cherrystone Auctions, New York. Together with a stipple-engraved portrait of Napoleon
