In the book Holroyd was specifically trying to trace a portrait of Agnes which had been painted by Robin Goodwin in the 1940s and was mentioned as a specific request in her will 'my oil painting half length portrait of a lady in blue dress by Robin Goodwin' and was left to a Mrs Vera Wall in Worthing. Holroyd never managed to locate the painting before the publication of his book.Agnes May Bickerstaff was born in 1898 in St. Helens, Lancashire. Her father was a glass-grinder and later relocated the family to Southampton to run a small hotel near the docks. Agnes was a flighty child with big dreams, at 21 she married Second Lieutenant William Reynolds Lisle in a short-lived romance that was over by her 22nd birthday in 1920; 11 days after their divorce was granted she married Captain Thomas George Symonds Babb. She was still married to Babb when she met and ran off with Fraser Holroyd in 1926 and Holroyd was listed in the Babb's divorce petition. In 1934 she married for a third time to Reginald Alexander Beaumont-Thomas, a wealthy businessman, and they settled in Kensington. The Beaumont-Thomas' home became known for wild, raucous parties, gambling and Agnes' was often known by her new nickname Mamie, or Mamita. Eventually this marriage too, broke down and Agnes once again had to reinvent herself. Throughout her life she constantly changed her name, invented addresses, fabricated family backgrounds and seemed to revel in transforming her character time and time again. In 1955/56 she popped up in Worthing, where she died in 1974.
