He rose to prominence in 1940 as Minister for Bricks and, in 1941, became Director for Works, which involved the overseeing of hospitals, airfields, ordnance factories and prisoner of war camps. Mary Edis continued to paint and one of her portraits is in the National Portrait Gallery.
