An album of approx 200 WWII photographs, mostly 3¼” x 2½”, a few larger up to whole plate size, taken by 1234197 A/C (later Cpl) C J Pearce, RAF, of scenes in N Africa, Sicily, Naples, Rome, Amalfi, etc 1942-45, mostly views, historic buildings, local scenes, all briefly identified, including a whole plate portrait of Pearce himself seated in a camp chair, and his “Crossing the Line Certificate”. A Brass and Copper Snuffbox, Abr. Wells, Bradford, dated 1773, rectangular, the hinged lid worked with a 17th century style half length depiction of a gentleman in armour fronted by an armorial, over the inscription Abr. Wells Bradford 1773, the underside with a female portrait similar, over the initials AW, 12.7cm wide Metal tear on lid rear long side, approx 1cm. Another L shape crack close by on same rim. Base is split, approx 5.5cm long, on edge of inlaid panel. Generally heavily worn but still showing crisp detail throughout. Some dents. Internally with velvet liner, badly stained and degraded and part missing. 050615
A Russian Circular Icon, 19th century, depicting the side-by-side half length portrait busts of St John the Evangelist and St Matthew Apostle, with relevant Cyrillic inscriptions in gilt, both holding books, 25cm diameter Some colour loss, flaking and cracking of oils. Damage where old hooks have placed. Otherwise in original state. 050615
English School, late 18th century: Portrait Miniature of a Gentleman, bust length, with white hair, blue eyes, and wearing a white lace jabot and blue jacket, oval, 4cm by 3.5cm, with woven hair locket back with fretted initials SR, ring for suspension, overall 5cm, with original grey shagreen velvet lined case Some dust and mould under glass, but miniature appears good, and mounts are good - slight scuffing. Case cut at top for miniature suspension ring, bad scuffing on angles of case, one hinge bracket broken 050615
An Ormolu Striking Mantel Clock, circa 1870, surmounted by a winged cherub holding a wreath, base with a reclining cherub holding a porcelain mounted small portrait of a lady, scroll feet, globe shaped dial with applied Roman numerals, twin barrel movement striking on a bell, stamped Deniere A Paris and numbered 2331, 35cm high 17.06.15, Ormolu surfaces are slightly faded, small scratches to the figures, globe dial with minor chips to the surface and one small vacant hole to the left hand side, movement is clean, strike is working.
An Ormolu and Porcelain Mounted Striking Mantel Clock, retailed by Le Roy & Fils, London and Palais Royal Paris, circa 1880, case surmounted by two cherubs holding a bunch of grapes and playing a triangle, flanked by rams' heads, light blue porcelain panels depicting urns with sprays of flowers, cherubs and a circular portrait of a lady, dial with Roman numerals, twin barrel movement striking on a bell, backplate stamped Japy Freres and numbered 12943, stamped with retailer's mark, 35cm high 09.06.15, Case surfaces are faded, bottom front mount is slightly loose, porcelain panels with some rubbing to the gilt decoration, dial is rubbed in parts and the enamel jewels are missing in parts, later pendulum, movement looks complete.
An Impressive Large Ormolu and Porcelain Mounted Striking Mantel Clock, retailed by D C Rait, A Paris, circa 1870, the elaborate case flanked with birds, scroll and floral mounts, blue porcelain panels with gilt painted frames and depicting a portrait of a young lady, spray of flowers, winged cherubs and a classical lady in robes, 5-inch enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, case back stamped H.Picard and numbered 4107, twin barrel movement with outside countwheel striking on a bell, backplate stamped Raingo A Paris and the retailer's stamp and numbered 4107, 56cm high 09.06.15, Case surfaces are faded in parts, dial winidng hole with a chip and signs of an old repair, movement is dirty.

Follower of Sir Peter Lely (19th century) Portrait of Robert and Elizabeth Heygate as children, reputedly after a 17th century original Oil on canvas, 117.5cm by 95cm Contained in an original ornate gilt frame Old re-line. Retouching throughout the face of the boy , his neck and generally within the old cracquelure/ flaking of the skin areas. The same being the case for the girl. Inscription strengthened. Surface generally somewhat flat and thin in places from restoration processes. Strengthening to the outline of the parrot, tendrils of the boys hair, arrow, parts of the definition/ folds of the drapery etc. Splitting to the paint in darker areas giving a texture to the surface. Bloom like material in evidence forming/ showing in a large spaced cracquelure like arrangement. Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Rubbing to edges etc.
Manner of Jean Baptiste Van Loo, circa 1740 Portrait of the Duke of Newcastle (1693-1769), three quarter length, seated Oil on canvas, 120cm by 94.5cm Contained in an ebonised carved frame In fully restored condition. Re-lined, cleaned and re-varnished. Two repairs with associated re-touching in upper right hand corner. Strengthening to frond like detail in this area. Smaller relatively small sporadic re-touching across upper background. Re-touching to old cracquelure/ flaking within the face and outline of the chin. Strengthening to definition of the lace cravat, sleeve and his left hand shoulder decoration. Sporadic re-touching to right hand side background with larger patches of restoration within the lower right hand corner and at his knee. Surface is generally somewhat flat and paint thin in places from the restoration processes. Essentially stable medium sized cracquelure across throughout entire surface. Vertical scratch within the blue velvet to the right of his open hand approx 5cms in length. Sporadic minor flaking mostly contained within the blue of his ensemble. Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Rubbing to edges etc.
Attributed to Simon Jacques Rochard (1788-1872) Portrait of George Rennie of Fantassie, three quarter length Oil on canvas, 90cm by 69cm George Rennie (1791-1866) was principally a civil engineer and by 1826 he was tasked with the construction of the Grosvenor Bridge (Chester). He was later involved with George Stephenson's Liverpool and Manchester railway, in addition to producing many other railway plans as Chief Engineer by 1846.

Morden for her assistance in cataloguing this lot. *ARR/(Droit de Suite) applies to this lot The painting has been cleaned and re-varnished and retains its original canvas. The right hand side of the figure's flesh has been relatively consistently re-touched : across the chin up and across the side of her nose, her left hand side temple and also running from her left hand side shoulder, collar bone, throughout her left hand side breast, and largely throughout her left hand side arm. The painting retains otherwise good surface and is in stable condition. The work has been seen by a restorer and his opinion the re-touching is not necessarily replacing losses to original paint.
DEMPSEY JACK: (1895-1983) American Boxer, World Heavyweight Champion 1919-26. A printed folio menu for Jack Dempsey's International Restaurant on Broadway, New York City, signed and inscribed by the boxer in blue ink to a clear area at the head of the front cover, which also features his portrait, and dated 29th January 1965 in his hand. OBERON MERLE: (1911-1979) Anglo-Indian Actress. Vintage signed and inscribed sepia 11 x 14 photograph, an engaging close-up portrait of the actress. Signed in blue fountain pen ink, largely across a clear area at the base of the image, 'To my "Babe", with much affection, Merle Oberon'. A few light indentations to the lower right corner only very slightly affect a couple of letters in the inscription, and not the signature. Some very slight, minor corner creasing, about VG
SELLERS PETER: (1925-1980) British Comedian & Actor. Vintage signed and inscribed postcard photograph, an early portrait study of Sellers surrounded by various amusing caricatures and printed captions. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink to the lower border. Together with five other vintage signed postcard photographs by various entertainers and actors including Laurence Olivier, George Formby, Diana Coupland etc., and also including a selection of 54 vintage postcard photographs and slightly larger, 8 x 10s etc., all unsigned or with facsimile signatures, subjects include Bing Crosby, Alan Ladd, Gary Cooper, Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Jane Russell, Dorothy Lamour, Lana Turner, Peter Lawford, Myrna Loy, Rita Hayworth, Abbott & Costello, Jimmy Durante etc., 25 of the photographs are contained in a scrapbook and a little crudely mounted to the pages with sellotape to the corners, the others loose. FITZGERALD ELLA: (1917-1996) American Jazz Singer. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of the youthful Fitzgerald in a head and shoulders pose. The publicity portrait was issued to promote Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink across a clear area of the image. A few very light, extremely minor surface and corner creases, VG Early in her career Fitzgerald sang with Chick Webb and his orchestra and upon the death of Webb in 1939 his band was renamed Ella Fitzgerald and Her Famous Orchestra. As nominal bandleader Fitzgerald recorded nearly 150 songs with the orchestra before it broke up in 1942.
FIELDS W.C.: (1880-1946) American Film Comedian. Vintage black ink signature and inscription on a piece with a small attached newspaper portrait to one side and a larger magazine photograph of Fields seated in a full length pose in costume from You Can't Cheat An Honest Man neatly attached above the signature. With a neatly attached newspaper portrait to one side and annotated and dated by a collector to the base of the page, 23rd May 1948; Chico Marx (1887-1961) American Film Comedian, one of the Marx Brothers. Vintage bold black fountain pen ink signature ('Kindest regards, Chico Marx') on a page removed from an autograph album; Harpo Marx (1888-1964) American Film Comedian, one of the Marx Brothers. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of Marx seated in a half length pose playing his trademark harp. Signed in blue ink at the head of the image with slightly weaker contrast; Zeppo Marx (1901-1979) American Film Comedian, one of the Marx Brothers. D.S., Zeppo Marx, being a signed cheque, Los Angeles, California, 14th February 1973. The cheque is drawn on the Security Pacific National Bank and is made payable to the Southern California Gas Company for the sum of $23.33. The signature is not affected by any bank cancellations.
