FRANÇOISE HUGUIER (France, 1942)."Jeune fille, pays lobi, Mali", 1996.Gelatin silver print.Edition 9/200.Signed and numbered in pencil.Size: 30,5 x 40,5 cm.Françoise Huguier debuted as a photographer for the first time in 1976, obtaining in 1983 the possibility to photograph the world of cinema, politics, culture and fashion working for Le Journal Libération, as well as working for magazines such as Vogue, The New York Times Magazine or Women's Wear Daily. At the same time, he began a personal work of photo-documentation, portraying scenes from Africa, Siberia and Japan. Her admiration for Africa led her to return on several occasions with the intention of photographing the intimacy of African women, resulting in a total of 200 black and white photographs and a first book entitled "On the Trail of Ghost Africa".Established in the world of fashion, she knows how to alternate with ease snapshot photography, mise-en-scène, portrait and landscape, thus obtaining an artistic career that has allowed her to obtain an eclectic work for more than forty years. His works initially acquired monochrome colours, showing a great scenographic and compositional delicacy, but it was in 1980 when his photographs acquired colour thanks to his dedication to fashion, in which the thicknesses, materials and compositions are richly highlighted. Her cosmopolitan universe, marked by photographic design and an unconventional documentary aesthetic, reflects her continuous commitment to photography, whether in reportage, fashion, portraits or cinema, knowing how to reflect her personal and original view.In addition to her career, she has been recognised for her involvement with Africa by creating the first Bamako Photography Biennial in Mali.
JOAN PONÇ BONET (Barcelona, 1927 - Saint-Paul, France, 1984)."Self-portrait", 1948Watercolour on paper.Unsigned.Frame with faults.Size: 21,5 x 15,5 cm; 36,5 x 30,5 cm (frame).Painter and draughtsman, he trained in Barcelona, in the studio of Ramón Rogent and at the Academy of Plastic Arts with Ángel López-Obrero. After devoting himself to painting and drawing in anonymity, he held his first individual exhibition in 1946, at the Galería Arte in Bilbao, which was to be his definitive establishment on the national art scene. In 1948, together with Tharrats, Puig, Cuixart, Tàpies and Brossa, among others, he founded the avant-garde group Dau al Set. Selected by Eugenio D'Ors, he took part in the Salón de los Once in Madrid in 1951 and 1952. In 1952 he took part in the Hispano-American Biennial, and the following year he spent some time in Paris, where he met Joan Miró and managed to exhibit at the Musée de la Villa. On the latter's recommendation, Ponç gained access to Brazilian artistic circles, settling in São Paulo from 1953 to 1962. In 1954, the year Dau al Set disbanded, he held an exhibition at the city's Museum of Modern Art, which was so successful that the organisation acquired all his works. In Brazil he visited the equatorial jungles, where he was impressed by their fauna, especially insects, which he incorporated into his imagery. In 1955 he founded the Taüll group with Marc Aleu, Modest Cuixart, Jaume Guinovart, Jaume Muxart, Mercadé, Tàpies and Tharrats. After returning to Catalonia due to illness, as a fully established artist he shows his work in New York, Rio de Janeiro, Bonn, Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva, Antibes and various Spanish cities. In 1965 he won the International Grand Prize for Drawing at the São Paulo Biennial. Ponç's paintings present phantasmagoric images that are both painful and tortured, in which the subconscious is the protagonist. For the painter, art is nothing more than an introduction to the mystery and secrets of the spirit. More of a draughtsman than a painter, his work is extremely detailed and meticulous. Ponç's production can be divided into six periods: the Dau al Set period (1947), the Brazilian period (1958), the metaphysical-geometric period (1969), the period of the metaphysical characters (1970), the acupainting period (1971) and a final period of synthesis (1972). He is currently represented at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de la Universidad de São Paulo, the Museo Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Centro-Museo Vasco de Arte Contemporáneo in Vitoria, the Museo de L'Empordà and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
ROBERT WHITAKER (United Kingdom, 1939-2011)"Taking a break, 1964.Photographic paper. Numbered 16/30.Signed in the lower right corner: Robert Whitaker.Size: 63,5 X 60 cm., 88 X 83 cm. (frame)In this photograph the Beatles pose in a group portrait, holding striped parasols, in a hotel in Perthshire, Scotland, 1964. From left to right: Ringo Starr, John Lennon (1940 - 1980), George Harrison (1943 - 2001) and Paul McCartney. The band and their photographer Robert Whitaker were determined to create something different from the usual promotional photos.Robert Whitaker (UK, 1939), who has died aged 72, was the Beatles' camera photographer between August 1964 and November 1966. An Englishman who emigrated to Australia, he was discovered there by the group's manager, Brian Epstein, who was very sensitive to the quality of visual work.Robert Whitaker, born in Britain in 1939, died in 2011. Robert described himself as "a young Australian", as his father and grandfather were both Australian.Although he has worked primarily in Britain, Australia and Australia, the connections have been a major influence on his work and career.Robert began working as a photographer in London in the late 1950s, but moved to Melbourne in 1961, where he began studying at Melbourne University and became part of Melbourne's small but thriving art scene. Robert was running an independent penthouse photography studio in Flinders Street, Melbourne, when he had his fateful meeting with The Beatles and their manager Brian Epstein, during their 1964 tour of Australia. His meeting came about more or less by accident, when he accompanied a journalist friend to an interview with Brian Epstein for a Jewish News article. The image was published with the article, which led him to meet Epstein and his first shots of the Beatles, photos of Paul McCartney and George Harrison, each holding boomerangs presented by their Australian fans.Robert Whitaker: "I photographed Epstein, saw that he was a peacock and a gentleman, and put peacock feathers around his head in photographic relief. It was removed when he saw the photo.

The artist has said that this work was painted in 2013.Indian miniatures, Chinese landscapes, Rothko, Turner, Tapies, Morandi, Gaitonde, Barve, Kolte and Wankhede are works and painters that have inspired Nitin Dadrawala. Born in Bombay, now Mumbai, Dadrawala received his MA in Literature from Bombay University in 1980 and subsequently joined the J.J School of Art in 1983 to learn painting. It was here that he learnt both portrait painting and abstract painting, but it was the latter that he was drawn to. Heavily influenced by different schools of philosophy including Marathi Saint poets, Navnath Sampraday, Mahanubhav and Zen masters, the four works in this auction are an exemplification of his various influences. All four works come from the same series, and Dadrawala's focus in these works was to make an impression with both appearance and disappearance in one space. He has said that it was in this series he could see the growth of himself as a painter. He is concerned with giving solace to the viewer, and to capture the beauty of silence and calmness, as achieved by Rothko and Gaitonde. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
