A “Battle of Britain” commemorative sword by Wilkinson, the blade captioned “Dedicated to “The Few” and many who helped make victory possible”, etched with figures of a pilot mechanic, W.R.A.F. plotter, N.C.O. and armourer on one side, the other with a “scramble” scene of pilots running to their Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft, the guard shaped as an eagle with outstretched wings, with hardwood grip and pommel with Battle of Britain inscription and embossed portrait of Winston S. Churchill, 114.3cm long, mounted on display board, 129.5cm long, (plating on sword blade defective) (1)
* WWI Royal Flying Corps. “In Memoriam” Raymond W. Stanley, two mementos of a pilot of the RFC comprising a fine enlarged portrait photograph of the subject by F.N. Birkett of London, c. 1916, depicting the aviator in full flying attire beside his early biplane trainer, three-quarter length portrait, signed in black ink lower right by the photographer, mounted in original stained-oak frame with gilt liner (26 x 22in 66 x 53cm), together with a propeller souvenir from an early aeroplane flown by the subject, which crash-landed during a training flight at Hounslow, mahogany and laminated hardwood with damage and loss to the end of one blade, variously stamped markings inscribed “J5 No. 4”. Also with a full obituary notice appended to the photograph detailing his career and untimely death in an accident dated Jan 17th 1917. Raymond Stanley had qualified as a First-class Air-Mechanic serving with the RFC during the early years of the war, qualified as a pilot via membership of the Royal Aero Club in June 1916. Training on a variety of machines he was due to leave for service with 42nd Reserve Squadron on the Western Front, but suffered a fatal accident on his last trial flight the day prior to departure on January 17th 1917. Sketches from Nature by J[ohn Natt] so titled on first leaf, late 18th and early 19th c., containing two pencil drawings by Mason Chamberlin RA (1727-87), the first a head and shoulders portrait in profile of the infant John, 9.5 x 6.5cm and mounted as a frontispiece, the second a study of trees (somewhat browned), 13.5 x 9.5cm and mounted towards rear on a leaf following a mounted four stanza poem by Chamberlin dated 7th October 1780 and written on the anniversary of the Reverend Anthony and Mary Natt’s wedding day, all three items unsigned and identified on mounts beneath, plus thirty-six mounted drawings believed to be by John Natt, the majority rural views but including Oxford scenes and the Isle of Wight, the majority pencil and monochrome wash but including seven watercolours, three pencil drawings, one pen and ink and one graphite copy of a Rembrandt portrait (this being the only one signed, dated 2nd April 1793), the largest approx. 23 x 31.5cm and the smallest approx. 14 x 10cm, mostly tipped on to album leaf rectos with cut corners and captions beneath, often with dates, the back of the album including four further watercolours and one drawing of various scenes, all but one identified on the mounts as being drawn by Mrs Natt (the album’s compiler?), additionally one autograph letter to John Natt dated 3rd February 1798 tipped on to an album leaf and relating to Natt’s recovery from an illness, contemp. half roan gilt over marbled boards, crude paper repairs to joints, 4to. John Natt (1778-1843) was the son of Nathan, of Netteswell, Essex, a clergyman. Natt went up to St. John’s College, Oxford and matriculated on the 28th June 1795; BA 1799, MA 1803, BD 1808, Scholar & Fellow 1795-1831, Librarian 1822, Bursar 1824, Vice-President 1826, Lecturer of St. Giles’s, Oxford, 1809, Rector of St. Sepulchre’s, London, 1829, until his death on 12th February 1843 (see Alumni Oxienses). Mason Chamberlin (1727-87) was an English portrait painter and one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. (1)

Portrait of a soldier, Montmartre, pen & ink and watercolour, signed to lower right corner, 196 x 128mm (7.75 x 5ins), tipped-in on mount, together with two original pen & black ink on paper French political cartoons of WWI period, satirising the German Kaiser, by E. Tat, both signed and with pencil inscription to lower edge, plus another similar political cartoon in black ink and blue wash, by Lubin de Beauvais, plus six other original drawings and prints (10)
* Churchill (Sir Winston Leonard Spencer, 1874-1965). Head-and-Shoulders Portrait by D. Tillett (?), c. 1950, full face with spotty bowtie and jacket, oil on board, somewhat smoke stained, 20 x 15cm, framed with label pinned beneath, together with a second oil portrait of Churchill in amateur style, oil on board, signature indistinct, 41 x 30cm, plus two vintage b&w photos showing Winston Churchill on the platform at West Essex Conservative Club, 23rd November 1954, 20 x 25cm, framed and glazed with typed details to verso, the second showing Churchill coming down the steps at Woodford Conservative Association at the 1947 election, 16 x 21cm, card mount torn with ink details to verso, plus two framed and glazed photographs of Margaret Thatcher, one smiling from a car window, the second smaller one at her desk, 12.5 x 10.5cm, signed on mount beneath but now somewhat faded, both somewhat soiled, plus other related items, including West Essex Conservative Club minutes, 2 vols., 1931-38, reproduction photos of Churchill, etc. Provenance: West Essex Conservative Club. It is believed that the smoke stained portrait was displayed there.. (16)

Head-and-shoulders b&w photographic portrait by Dorothy Wilding, [1937], showing the Queen wearing a tiara and strings of pearls, bromide print on tissue and card mount with Wilding’s copyright credit lower right, 48.5 x 36cm, signed and dated on mount beneath image, `Elizabeth R, 1940’, faint smudge to signature, framed and glazed, overall 84 x 64cm (1)
* Tenniel (John, 1820-1914). Autograph letter signed `John Tenniel’, 10 Portsdown Road, Maida Hill, W., 19th May 1892, to Gerald Christy, regretting that he is unable to accept Christy’s polite invitation to be present at Mr. du Maurier’s lecture due to a prior and unavoidable engagement, and so returning the tickets [not present], one page, 8vo, paper window mount, together with Browne (Tom, 1872-1910), Autograph postcard signed `Tom B’, franked Dorking, 21st August 1904, addressing Ma B and including a vignette head and shoulders photo pasted to right of message as promised and `similiar to Clara’s. It is one for you Òto tear in little bits and paste together againÓ - hope to see you at Tennis tomorrow (Monday) night, red and brown watercolour outline border to vignette, address panel marked for Miss A. Attree of 71 High Street, Dorking, minor soiling, 9 x 14cm, plus Patti (Adelina, 1843-1919), Autograph letter signed `Adelina de Caux’, n.d., to Madame Schilezzi, in English, thanking her for sympathy explaining that it would be impossible to find tickets for that evening and sending a portrait (not present), `therefore I shall be deprived of the extreme pleasure of seeing you in the stalls. However I hope to see you soon again, either in Paris, or else positively, I shall call on you in London’, 3 pp. on black-edged paper, 8vo, with orig. envelope (stamp removed), both with album mount remains to versos (3)
* Trade cards. A collection of ninety-seven late 19th c. Continental trade cards depicting French Departments, fine chromolithographic printing, some heightened with gold, each depicting a map of the Department set against a scenic background incorporating arms of the Department, produce and sometimes a medallion portrait of an historical figure, nine cards have printed backs and measure 8.5 x 11.5cm, the remainder have plain backs and measure 8 x 11cm. An autograph album entitled A Great War, containing a total of seventy-one autographs on 26 card leaves, mostly clipped signatures mounted above or below b&w portrait photos, a mixture of real photo postcards and magazine reproductions, the majority mounted three-to-a-page with subject details in white on a black background and page captions in gold, British Minister autographs include H. H. Asquith, D. Lloyd George (2 signatures), Edward Grey (authograph letter signed), A. Bonar Law (plus typed letter signed), Edward Carson, Walter Runciman, Augustin Birrell, A. J. Balfour, Lord Lansdowne, Lord Derby (together with a repaired typed letter signed), John Redmond, Arthur Henderson, Lord Milner, Frederick Smith, A.
