Fred May - ``The Royal Engineers``, ``Divisional H.Q. of an Ack Ack Division`` and ``With the A.A (Ack Ack)``, caricature portrait sketches, ink and wash heightened with white, signed and dated 1941/1942 (3-unframed) **Fred May was a caricaturist and painter, initially working for the North Eastern Daily Gazette and later the Tatler. His first cartoons for the Tatler were sent home in 1917 from the trenches where he was serving as an infantry officer. He continued to work for the Tatler until his death in 1976.
An oak panelled back armchair in Charles II style, carved with a portrait of Charles II flanked by mythical beasts above an inscription `ACTUM EST DE REPUBLICA`, above a rectangular panel with Hera in her winged chariot with two peacocks, above twin arches relief carved with crowns and inscribed `CH REX D G` and the date `1660`, 19th century.

A typescript by Sir Philip Hendy regarding the Return of Goya's Duke of Wellington, to the author's agent, Joyce Weiner Associates, London, together with Manuel de la Conservation et de la Restauration des Peintures, 8vo, published 1939 by the Institut International de Cooperation Intellectuelle, dedicated 'To Philip Hendy from his ever grateful Helmut R, London, April 1939', and a typescript of the Technical Testing Methods and Van Gogh Falsifications: Retrospections on the Wacker case. Sir Philip Hendy was Director of the National Gallery from 1946-67 and his tenure was marred by two controversies; the Exhibition of Cleaned Pictures 1936-47, also known as the cleaning controversy, featuring paintings over restored by Helmuth Ruhemann, and the theft of Goya's portrait of The Duke of Wellington in 1961 which called in to question the adequacy of the Gallery's security.
