* CRAIG CAMPBELL (SCOTTISH B 1960 - ), THE 18TH, THE OLD COURSE, ST ANDREWS oil on canvas, signed 50.8cm x 76.2cm (20 x 30 inches) Framed. Provenance: Private collection Edinburgh. Note: Campbell was born in Prestwick, Ayrshire, in 1960. This area of Scotland is abundant with golf courses so it's not surprising that the majority of his inspiration has come from the sport and its personalities. Craig studied at The Glasgow School of Art and his close attention to detail soon earned him prestigious exhibitions including a tour of the USA and a show at The British Open Championship. Recent years have seen him undertaking some of his most challenging work yet with large commissions for corporate clients such as Donald Trump and the new clubhouse at Trump Turnberry. This included several large paintings depicting the famous 1977 'Duel in the Sun'. He has many other clients including The European Tour, Amazon, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Westcot Credit Services, Dawn Group Ltd, Monsanto (USA), The Yorkshire Bank, Ayr Racecourse, JP Management, to name but a few. In 2005 Craig was commissioned by Barbara Nicklaus to paint a portrait of her husband Jack.. Later that year Jack met with Craig at Rufflets Country House Hotel, St. Andrews, during British Open week and signed and dated his new painting commemorating Jack's final Open. The original portrait was sold privately for £20,000 and the prints have raised in excess of $200,000 around the world for leading children and cancer charities. In 2015 Craig was also commissioned to paint a portrait of Tom Watson at his final British Open at St. Andrews. The last few years Craig's golf art has attracted numerous buyers and increased values through several auction houses, including Bonhams, with a portrait of Tiger Woods selling at £13,000.
SCOTTISH SCHOOL (EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY), PORTRAIT OF ALEXANDER ROSE (1818 - 1841) oil on canvas 61cm x 49cm Framed Label verso: Biography of sitter verso, on panel screwed to stretcher. Note: Alexander Rose was born in 1818, the son of John and Lilias Rose, Holme House, Nairn, a military family. He was born in India, where his father was serving at the time, but returned to Scotland where he grew up. He returned to India as an ensign in the East India Company, and was involved in the futile First Afghan War (1838 - 1842), which ended in ignominious defeat, and the slaughter of all but one of the two thousand British and Indian troops. During the seige of Kabul, he evidently emulated the deeds of his ancestor, Lord Rose, a crusador at the court of Edward I, by risking his life to obtain water for his men. His ancestor's actions entitled the family to incorporate water "budgets" (carriers) in the family coat of arms. Alexander was killed during the final retreat.
