Continental School (18th century), Portrait miniature of a lady, half length, wearing a green lace trimmed dress with scalloped collar with bow and pearl necklace, her dark hair tied in a bun with pearls, falling in ringlets onto her shoulders, oval oil on copper, 8 x 6.4cm., in an embossed leather case.* Condition: Surface dirt, would benefit from a light clean. Undulation to the copper plate, particularly to left side. Two small dents in the surface. Several small paint losses and minor scratches. Leather case: worn and scuffed but intact. Original hinge and clasp functions normally.

An erotic French portrait miniature of La Princesse Pauline Bonaparte (Princess Borghese), early 19th century, circular, watercolour on ivory, depicting the subject nude, half length, cupping her left breast in her hand, signed with initial (A?) and dated 1816 lower right, 8.3cm. diameter, in foliate scroll gilt metal frame, inscribed to hand written label verso., *Condition:Two paint flakes to edge at approx. 8 o'clock - there are four narrow sections to both sides, the top and bottom of the miniature (approx. 2mm at widest point) which appear to have been added with card, either later or when painted - we are not sure. It is from the left of these that the paint has flaked. Minor contact rubs/flakes from frame to very extremeties of the miniature (only visible when removed from frame). Miniature otherwise good with no other faults. Frame has some tarnish spotting to borders throughout.
ALEXANDER MUNRO (1825–1871) TERRACOTTA PORTRAIT OF DANTE signed with artist's monogram AM, set within a painted terracotta plaque, decorated with applied stars 31.5cm diameter overall Note: Alexander Munro was a sculptor of the Pre-Raphaelite movement whose early talents were supported by financial assistance from his father's employer, the Duchess of Sutherland. From 1842 he assisted and trained in the Edinburgh studio of the sculptor Alexander Handyside Ritchie. He came to London in 1848 to study sculpture under Charles Barry. At this time he also worked as a mason on the new Palace of Westminster. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1849 to 1870, and at the Great Exhibition of 1851 where his Rossetti-influenced figure-group 'Paolo and Francesca' was first exhibited.

He produced many public statues and architectural carvings and portrait busts and exhibited at the RGIFA, the RA and at the 1888 International Exhibition in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow. In the 1880s he was assistant to James Pittendrigh MacGillivray in the making of his Monument to William Ewart Gladstone in Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh.

A unique collection of autographs and artwork by celebrities and notable figures including pop stars, artists, sports personalities, actors, authors, comedians, designers. The collection was put together by the late Karen Gammon and began life as her contribution to a Millennium Art Exhibition designed to raise money for a number of different charities (nominated by the celebrities). Karen sent a button to each celebrity and asked them to design a piece of art around it. Many of the designs are appropriate for the figure in question and represent the very thing they are famous for. The collection includes: J. K. Rowling (who has sketched three silhouettes flying around her button on broomsticks, one clearly being Harry Potter wearing a scarf); Mary Fedden RA (who has sketched a cat holding her button in a flower); Sir Paul McCartney (who has produced a humorous cartoon with the button as a nose); Dame Elizabeth Blackadder RA (who has used her buttons in a vibrant watercolour drawing of a lizard); Sir Stirling Moss (who has turned his button into a steering wheel); Grayson Perry RA (who has turned his buttons into figures being hanged); Mary Quant (who has incorporated her button into a sketch of a dress); Antony Gormley RA (who has drawn a tiny figure holding up his button); Lord Lichfield (self-portrait taking a photograph with the button as his camera); Nick Park (who has drawn a cartoon of Gromit with the button as his nose); Ronnie Barker (who has used his padlock button in a gag about his wife's handbag); Anthony Green RA (who has incorporated his button into a self-portrait); Phil Collins (who has turned his button into a drum kit); Sir Nicholas Serota (who has depicted his button on a Tate Modern plinth); Dick Francis (who has drawn a horse & jockey jumping over his button); Sir David Jason (who has doodled a wall with 'Del Boy woz 'ere'). The collection, which has been framed, comes with separate paperwork and consent forms relating to the acquisition of the autographs (often signed again), and even press/publicity photographs (many of which are again signed), together with numerous copies of a book that was produced to illustrate and explain the collection, 'Celebrity Button Art - An A to Z of Celebrity Mini Masterpieces', 2010 (with foreword by Bonnie Tyler). In her introduction, Karen states, 'Why art around a button you may ask? I needed a common starting point yet something that would inspire the creation of a mini masterpiece without directing or inhibiting the artist too much. I needed something that was seemingly insignificant by itself but would become an integral part of an imaginative spark of inspiration.' Equiano, Olaudah. The Intereting Narrative of The Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African, Written by Himself, third edition, London: Printed for, and Sold by, the Author, 1790. Half-calf with marbled boards, red morocco title label to spine with gilt title (Gustavus Vassa), stipple engraved frontispiece portrait of Equiano, folding plate of shipwreck. Contents generally good, some discolouration, a couple of nicks/creases to page edges, owner inscription to one of the blank endleaves, 'Mary Glover, July 24, 1859'. Equiano was the most famous 18th-century British writer of African heritage. His autobiography tells of his early life in what is now Nigeria, his kidnapping and traumatic transportation to the Americas and his experiences of enslavement and regaining freedom. Equiano became an Abolitionist and a businessman, and applied the skills of these callings to his book, publicising it with flair and using book promotion events to call for an end to the slave trade. English School (18th century) Portrait of the young Thomas Tyndall (1764-1804), training his spaniel Oil on canvas 130 x 103cm (51 x 40½ in.) Together with a copper name plaque and buckle of a dog's collar found with the bones of a dog in the shaft of the lead mine near Hunters Oak in Leigh Woods near Bristol, believed to have once belonged to the spaniel depicted in this portrait. Provenance: Estate of the late Peter Walwyn MBE (1933-2017)
