Blackpool Entertainment Interest Original Oil On Canvas 'Portrait Of Bambara' By W H Leathwood 1924 Large oil portrait of the West African Magician and entertainer Bambara who performed at Blackpool Tower during the 1920's. Rendered in impasto oils, Bambara is depicted smoking a cigarette, draped in traditional sky blue agbada robe trimmed with gold braid and adorned with crescent moon and star embroidery. His fez is decorated with central gold star, rubies and pearls, at his neck is a saffron silk cravat. Signed in red oil paint to bottom left 'W H Leathwood 1924, Blackpool'Housed in original yellow gilt frame, the inner mount titled 'Portrait Of Bambara' to bottom centre. Very good condition, 23.5 x 19.5 inches

Two notes in an envelope verso state that the portrait was painted by a Mr Walter of Dover, at Pine House, Dover, in 1844. The children are, left to right, Gertrude (b.1837, d.1872), Geraldine (b.1842, d.1930), and Sophia (b.1842, 'died young').

Note: The subject is identified on a later slip of paper, pasted verso, which goes on to state that he was a veteran of the Napoleonic War who spent a month in a cage in a Birmingham pub whistling like a parrot, thereby gaining his nickname.

A Staffordshire enamel snuff box, c.1780, the rectangular form painted with a portrait of a lady raising a shell to her hair, possibly the actress Lavinia Fenton, the sides painted with flower sprays reserved on a white ground with gilt trelliswork, 6.8cm. The portrait bears a marked resemblance to that of Lavinia Fenton, later Duchess of Bolton, attributed to George Knapton. She was most famous for her role as Polly Peachum in The Beggar's Opera.
Three Italian maiolica dishes, early 20th century, two by Vincenzo Molaroni of Pesaro, one painted with a scene depicting the Rape of the Sabine Women within a wide border of mythical creatures and putti, the other with a portrait and the inscription 'Multo se Ipsum Quam Nostem Superasse Operosius Est' quoting Valerius Maximus, in a giltwood frame, the third dish with a bridge in a rococo landscape, one dish cracked, 32.5cm max. A good pair of Royal Worcester plaques by William Hawkins, date codes for 1915, one painted with a portrait of the Duke of Wellington after Francisco de Goya, the other with Admiral Nelson after Lemuel 'Francis' Abbott, both signed W A Hawkins, mounted in elaborate gilt wood frames, the plaques 15cm x 11cm. (2) Old paper labels to the reverse.
A Jacobite portrait firing glass, c.1740, the trumpet bowl rising from a short teardrop stem and engraved with the head and shoulders of Bonnie Prince Charlie, with the motto 'Audentior Ibo', raised on a thick firing foot, 10.5cm. Cf. Geoffrey B. Seddon, Jacobites and Their Drinking Glasses, p.90, pl.30 for a similar example.
