Ralph Hedley 29 1/4in. x 24 1/4in. (74.5 x 62cm) A portrait of J.G. Wilson and his son A.A. Wilson, at Staindrop Hall, with the Oxford 100 Yards Cup Signed and dated 1903; Sold together with a framed photograph and an unframed mezzotint, each depicting the same subject as the painting above.. NB: Staindrop Hall, home of the Luxmoore family is situated in Staindrop Village, County Durham and was inherited by J.G. Wilson, a Durham solicitor under the condition that his family changed their surname to Luxmoore. Wilson was a friend and patron of Ralph Hedley and purchased many of his pictures and items of carved furniture. He owned around thirty Hedley paintings at the time of his death in 1929. J.G. Wilson and his son A.A. Wilson were both talented sprinters, though J.G.W. was the better of the two. They were both at Oxford and J.G.W. won the 100 yards three years in a row, once in the record time of 10.0 seconds (at the time possibly a world record as international running hardly existed in 1870).

Literature: Mentioned page 237 under 'Collection of Mrs. Nellie Carr', Adrian Bury Joseph Crawhall: The Man & The Artist.. NB: Druid was the dog of John Carr - friend of Joseph Crawhall II and fishing companion. Joseph Crawhall III painted Druid in 1880 at the age of 19. John Carr (of 'Roseworth', a large house in Gosforth at Roseworth Crescent/Roseworth Gardens) was the great grandfather of the Vendor. Bequeathed to his son Charles Carr (sailor and timber importer), who married Nellie; she bequeathed it to John Carr, father of the Vendor.
Scottish School, c. 1626, Portrait of Alexander, 4th Lord Elphinstone, Lord High Treasurer of Scotland (D.1637/8) , inscribed and later inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on panel, 193x101.5cm.; 76x40in. The sitter was the son of Robert, 3rd Lord Elphinstone and his wife, Margaret, daughter of Sir John Drummond of Innerpeffray. He was made a member of the new Privy Council and was appointed a Lord of Session in 1599. He was Lord High Treasurer of Scotland from 1599 to 1601. He married Jean, the daughter of William, 6th Lord Livingstone, circa 1576.
Scottish School, c.1620, Portrait of Alexander, 5th Lord Elphinstone (D.1649), later inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas, 74x61cm.; 29.25x24in. The sitter was the son of Alexander, 4th Lord Elphinstone and his wife, Jean, the daughter of the 6th Earl of Livingston. He married Elizabeth, daughter of the 3rd Lord Drummond in 1608.
Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt., 1646 - 1723, Portrait of Anne, wife of the 7th Lord Elphinstone, later inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas, 124x100cm.; 48.75x39.5in. The sitter was the daughter of Alexander Burnett, Archbishop of St Andrews. She married Alexander, 7th Lord Elphinstone on 10th September 1667. He died aged 22 and the sitter subsequently married Patrick Murray, 3rd Lord Elibank, before 1677.
Attributed to David Scougall, fl.1654-1672, Portrait of Lady Isabel Maitland (circa 1654-1706), later inscribed with the identity of the sitter; inscribed on the reverse, oil on canvas in a painted oval, 64x53cm.; 25.25x20.75in. The sitter was the daughter of Charles, 3rd Earl of Lauderdale. She married John, 8th Lord Elphinstone in 1670 when she was sixteen years old, and had five children.
Attributed to William Aikman, 1682-1731, Portrait of Charles, 9th Lord Elphinstone (1676-1738), later inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas in a painted oval, 74x62cm.; 29.25x24.5in The sitter was the son of John, 8th Lord Elphinstone. He went to Glasgow University in 1699, before joining the army. He was severely wounded at Agremont in 1708, and he eventually retired from the army in 1720. He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir William Primrose, 2nd Bart. in 1702.
