Attributed to William Shuter (British fl.1771-1798) - Portrait of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), half length, seated and holding a book inscribed Hartley; painted circa 1798, oil probably on panel (portrait has not been removed from glazed frame so the support material has not been verified); no signature visible but old inscription verso refers to a signature Shuter, observed when the portrait was last removed from its frame in 1948; 28cm x 24.5cm approximately, in moulded gilt framePlease note: An inscription verso dated 1873, by Richard Poole King, states that the portrait was painted at Nether Stowey where Coleridge rented a cottage from 1797 to late 1799/1800. The cottage was owned by Richard Poole King's uncle, Thomas Poole, and the inscription states that the portrait was inherited by Richard Poole King upon the death of his uncle in 1837. At the time of Coleridge's residence in Nether Stowey, his friend William Wordsworth lived three miles away at Alfoxton Park. The portrait bears a close stylistic resemblance to the portrait of Wordsworth by William Shuter in the Cornell University Library collection in America. It seems very possible that the two portraits were painted on the same occasion, with a similar chair shown in both compositions. The book in Coleridge's hand is inscribed Hartley, referring to the philosopher David Hartley, hero of the poet and also the name of Coleridge's eldest son, born in 1796. Richard Poole King refers to a visit made by Derwent Coleridge (third son of Coleridge) circa 1850, to inspect the portrait, when he "pronounced it to be the best likeness of his father extant". An engraving of the portrait was made by William Holl and used as the frontispiece for the Edward Moxon 1852 edition of the works of Coleridge. Copies of this engraving are held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish Portrait Gallery.
