Manner of Allan Ramsey (1713-1784) pencil, head of a man, 19 x 17cm, together with a study of a hand with note attributing to Alan Ramsey and a similar portrait group. NB: The portrait has a resemblance to portrait of the artist's father, the poet Alllan Ramsey (1684-1758) in the National Galleries of Scotland collection, said to be Ramsey's earliest known portrait, made when he was 16. Five 19th century silhouette portraits, including an oval mounted portrait with text verso '. M. Webb portrait of her beloved mother deceased Jan.. 21 1886 left in possession of Mrs N. Webb decd-1886 East Bergholt Suffolk.', 10.5 by 8.4cm, mounted, glazed and framed, 22.5 by 19cm, all unsigned, all with maple effect veneer frames. An early 19th century Bilston style porcelain and enamel trinket box, hand painted decoration throughout, with portrait of a lady to the interior of its lid, and outdoor scenes to its exterior, with gilt metal mounted hinged lid a/f, 8.5 by 7 by 3.5cm high.Provenance: Privately owned, Clipsham House, Lincolnshire.Metal mount to base has come away from the base, pitting and wear throughout.
John Russell (British, 1745-1806) Portrait of Lady Elizabeth Chaplin Daughter of Brownlow, 8th Earl of Exeter, in pastel, signed and dated in pencil 'J. Russell RA pixit 1791, 60 by 44cm, glazed and in a gilt frame, 76 by 60cm. Provenance: Privately owned, Clipsham House, Lincolnshire. Purchased from Sotheby's in 22.11.1979, sitter a family relation.
Edward, Duke of Windsor (1894-1972) and Wallis, Duchess of Windsor (1895-1986) autographed photograph portrait by Dorothy Wilding, signed by both sitters and dated '1956', also signed by the photographer and bearing a studio label verso, numbered '3259 A', image size 23 by 17.5cm, mounted within a silver Cartier frame with the late Duke's crest, 27.5 by 22.7cm overall.Provenance: Privately owned, Clipsham House, Lincolnshire, believed to have been a gift to Leonora Corbett, an English actress, who was also the mistress of Egmont van Zuylen van Nyevelt (of the Rothschild family). Corbett was socialised with a range of celebrities from George Bernard Shaw Vivien Leigh. The photograph was possibly given to Corbett in Paris or New York. Corbett owned an apartment at the Waldorf Astoria (she later rented it to Marilyn Monroe).Condition: photograph has become attached/glued to the glass of the frame, to all its four corners, some tears are visible in those four corners. There are some areas of discolouration to the photograph, two flies also trapped under the glass. Wear and handling marks to the frame.
Henry Albert Frith (British, act.1837-1854) two silhouette portraits, comprising a full length portrait of a gentleman, handwritten text '..Buchanan..', 26.5 by 18.5cm, mounted, glazed and framed, 36.5 by 28cm, a portrait of a child, signed and dated '1847', together with two others, one indistinctly signed, dated 1861, all with birds eye maple effect frames. Michael Keeling (British, 1750-1820), Portrait of Rev. Robert Hill (1746-1831) of Hough Hall, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1805, 50in x 40in (127c x 101.5cm), framed. Note: Rev. Robert Hill (1746-1831) of Hough Hall, also Rector of Bolas Magna in Shropshire. He was brother to Sir Richard Hill and his siblings were well known English preachers and evangelists in the 18th century. He married Mary Wilbraham and inherited Hough Hall. The estate of Hough and Wynbunbury church is shown in the background. Provenance: by descent through the Hill family.
