λSir Jacob Epstein (British, 1880 - 1959) MALVINIA, circa 1944 Patinated bronze, signed 51cm high overall including wood plinth On view at: The Sculpture Park Sir Jacob Epstein KBE 10 November 1880 - 19 August 1959 was one of the leading sculptors of the 20th century, often considered a pioneer of modern sculpture. Born to Polish Jewish immigrant parents in New York, he moved to Europe in 1902. First he studied in Paris, but then, allegedly after a trip to the British Museum, he decided to settle in Britain, becoming a British citizen in 1911. He often produced controversial works which challenged taboos and what was considered appropriate subject matter. One critic dubbed him a ‘sculptor in revolt’. Though he created several large works of a more architectural nature, he is probably best known for his roughly textured and expressively modelled portrait sculptures in bronze. Epstein was drawn to portrait sitters often for their diverse physiognomy and unconventional beauty, sensitively yet unceremoniously rendering his central subject of the human form through acute observation. The portrait bust of Polish model Pola Givenchy sold through these rooms just recently as part of the Oakley House auction was a good example of this, as is Malvinia, which depicts a sitter of African descent. After Epstein’s death in 1959, Henry Moore paid tribute to Epstein, acknowledging that although he was the subject of much derision during his lifetime, his innovative works paved the way for others who would continue to push the boundaries of British sculpture. His works are held in world renowned museum collections including the National Portrait Gallery, Tate, MoMa, and even the Vatican Museums. Malvinia is noted in Evelyn Silber, The Sculpture of Epstein, with a complete catalogue, Oxford, 1986, no 359 λ Indicates that this lot may be subject to Droit de Suite royalty charges. λGlynn Williams (British, b. 1939) Morning Ancaster weatherbed limestone 15cm high, 103cm wide, 63cm deep overall; unique On view at: The Sculpture Park Hailing from Shrewsbury, Glynn Williams was educated at Wolverhampton College of Art during the 1950s, and subsequently worked in Rome at the British Institute for several years, after winning the prestigious Prix de Rome scholarship. Later on in his career he taught sculpture at the Wimbledon School of Art, and the Royal College of Art, where he was for a time also Head of Sculpture.Though Williams began his career as an abstract sculptor, he started to create figurative carvings from English stones in the late 1970s. After first producing several upright figures, he created a number of sculptures which 'hugged the ground', including the present lot. Capturing a moment of tenderness, the stylised figures show the monolithic, essential quality of Williams' carving, departing from the exactitudes of anatomy yet retaining a remarkable sensitivity to human form and emotion. He completed various public commissions, including the Purcell Memorial and the monument of David Lloyd George in Parliament Square. His limestone portrait bust of Noel Gilroy Annan, Baron Annan, is held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. A similar piece also entitled Morning, executed around the same time as the present lot, is in the collection of Tate Britain, London λ Indicates that this lot may be subject to Droit de Suite royalty charges. λ Geraldine Knight (British, 1933 - 2008) Jacob, Ram's head Bronze 73 cm high On view at: The Sculpture Park Geraldine Knight began her artistic training in 1949 at the Brighton College of Art before relocating to London to attend the Royal Academy Schools from 1952 to 1956. Following her training as a sculptor, Knight lived and worked in Italy for two years on the prestigious Prix de Rome scholarship. Knight began creating life size animal sculptures whilst in Italy, and subsequently exhibited a bronze flock of sheep at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of 1986. Knight was an accomplished portrait sculptor, and often produced works intended for use as public sculpture. Both her human figures and animal sculptures are characterised by a gentle naivety, and sense of humour. She also regularly worked on building restoration projects, and stage sets. Knight dedicated much of her career to teaching life drawing and sculpture at institutions such as the Sir John Cass School of Art, Twickenham College of Technology and the Kingston College of Art λ Indicates that this lot may be subject to Droit de Suite royalty charges.
