Circle of Balthasar Denner (1685-1749) German Portrait of a bearded elderly man, bust length, in profile Oil on panel, 46cm by 38.5cm Bears fragmentary label verso giving the work to Balthasar DennerGlazed. Surface dirt, discoloured and deteriorated varnish which has taken on a chalky/opaque quality that is more evident around certains areas of the grain of the wood, splits and cracks to the panel and some of the imperfections to the surface in general. Pronounced vertical split from top to bottom of panel (see images) with associated essentially right angled triangular loss which is approx. 1.5cm on longest side at bottom of split and lower edge of panel. Further pronounced vertical graining or possible old repairs to background upper left hand side. Bloom to surface. Likely old treatment to surface with areas of thinned paint etc... AF.
English School (Late 17th/ early 18th century)Portrait of a man, thought to be William ShakespeareOil on panel, possibly canvas laid onto panel 14cm by 9cmGlazed. Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Widely spaced stable craquelure most notably to the forehead and nose. There are two more significant lines of cracking, one through the centre of the forehead and one horizontally above the eyebrows. A notable area of pitting approx 2cm by 1cm to the sitters ruff towards left edge of frame. Fairly consistent infilling and retouching to old craquelure visible under UV. There are areas of panel at the top and bottom edges of the picture left exposed when the work was laid down.
Follower of Willem Wissing (1656-1687) DutchPortrait of William III, half length, standing, wearing an armoured breast plate, lace cravat and a powdered wig, in a feigned ovalOil on canvas, 72cm by 60cmOld reline. Cleaned and revarnished. The surface has been somewhat flattened and the paint is thin in places such as his right armoured shoulder etc as a result of the restoration process. Slight stretcher shadow. Now covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Mostly small-sized cracquelure essentially throughout which is more pronounced in areas such as across his forehead, background and his right shoulder and chest. Pin marks to corners, further pin mark right-hand side middle. Slightly loose in the frame. Evidence of some fairly consistent strengthening throughout the background left-hand side. Much of his right shoulder and arm is strengthened and repainted with less consistent areas of strengthening to definition and shadow across his chest, in and around his white lace cravat, the outline of his chin and left cheek and elements of curls and definition through his powdered wig. Likely restoration of two periods with some less apparent and consistent retouches to the face and background etc. Some general rubbings and abrasions to outer edges with further imperfections consistent with age.
