•HUBERT LINDSAY WELLINGTON (1879-1967) PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST Bears inscription on the stretcher, oil on canvas 49.5 x 39.5cm. Exhibited: London, Allied Artists' Association., 1905 ++ A little craquelure (see side of nose, left hand etc) * Wellington was born in Gloucester and studied art there for three years, then in Birmingham and at the Slade. Introduced by Spencer Gore to Sickert, he spent the summer of 1906 with Sickert near Dieppe. He lectured at the National Gallery (1919-1922), became Principal of the Edinburgh College of Art for ten years until 1942, and later returned to the Slade as a lecturer for two years until 1949. He wrote monographs of William Rothenstein and Jacob Epstein in the mid-1920's and showed his work at the NEAC, the RA and with the London Group. A one man show - his first solo show - was held at Agnews in 1963. "To draw and to paint has been a pleasure and even a necessity," he remarked. Sir Oswald's self portrait (1920) hangs above the fireplace. Roman Bronze Sestertius, Domitian, 51 AD - 96 AD, Emperor from 81 AD. Last of The Flavian Emperors. OBV: IMPCAESDOMITAVGGERM COSXII CENSPERTPP. Rev: SC Domitian STG. Holding thunderbolt and spear, crowned by Victory who stands l., behind him holding palm. In fair condition, large module, nice portrait, interesting reverse.
Roman Copper Dupondius AS, Domitian, in fair condition, toned with a nice clear portrait reverse is clear also toned. Noreva in fair condition, toned with nice reverse and portrait, Hadrian in fair condition, reverse interesting type, Salus sacrificing over altar. Hadrian in poor condition, but toned with clear portrait.
Greek Silver Diobol, Calabria - Taras, 4th Century BC. OBV: Head of Athena R, wearing crested helmet. Rev: Tapan Tinon Herakles standing r., strangling lion, behind there is a bow and club between legs. Toned in good fine condition, struck on a small flan. Portrait slightly obscured by the size of the flan, interesting reverse type.
Roman Bronze Dupondius, Augustus (Octavian), 27 BC-14 AD, Mint: Rome, issued under Caligula 37-41 AD. OBV: DIVVS AVGVSTVS radiate head of DIVVS, Augustus left, SC. Rev: CONSENSV SENATET EQ ORDIN PQR. Caligua Laurel to gate, seated l., on curule chair, holding branch in r. hand. In near fine for the issue, nice tone, corrosion below the portrait.
Roman Bronze Sestertius, Hadrian, 76-138 AD, Emperor from 117 AD. Rev: IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC PM TR PCOS VPP, Laureate Hd. of Hadrian r., slight. Drapery on far shoulder. Rev: SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI SC in ex., Victory standing l., holding palm and erecting trophy of arms and armour, shields at base. In near very fine condition, toned with a pleasing portrait, interesting reverse.

Hd. of Nero l., (countermark by Lugdunum mint 'Right of Eye' indicating that coin was used during the Civil Wars, during the revolt of Vindex in Gaul, March to May AD68). Rev: SECURITAS AVGVSTI SC, Securitas in a relaxed pose, enthroned r., head resting on right hand, holding sceptre in left, lighted altar and torch at her feet, mark of value II in ex. [Rome AD 64] in near fine condition, marks to the portrait, interesting Emperor, interesting reverse.

Reverse centrally struck, very clear inscription.

POLIDORI (John W.; 1795-1821, physician and writer) Side portrait in pencil of Edmund Finch (1789-1831), head and shoulders, signed with initials, and annotated to the reverse dated 1818, 12 x 10cm Note: A rare drawing by Byron's physician and the author of 'The Vampyre'. After returning to England, Polidori set himself up in a medical practice in Norwich in 1817. This may be a portrait of the brewer Edmund Rolfe Finch, sometime president of the Norfolk and Norwich Literary Institution.
