GERMAN VIOLIN, LOUIS LOWENDALL, DRESDEN DATED 1883 the two piece curly maple back stamped 'DRESDEN' and 'REGISTERED' and painted with a portrait of the violinist Ludwig Spohr, the button with a Registration stamp and number 390660, the back of the scroll branded 'LOWENDALL'S ARTIST VIOLIN'; the front of ash with interior label 'Louis Lowendall/ fecit Dresdæ. Anno 1883'; TOGETHER WITH a bow stamped GERMANY and branded initials ACHM in a cross, 740mm long; in a baize-lined wood case with extra keys, frets, strings, and tailpiece(back 358mm long, upper bout 170mm, lower bout 214mm)Footnote: Note: Ludwig Spohr, 1784 -1859, was a German composer, violinist, and conductor. Highly regarded during his lifetime, he toured extensively through Europe, and made six tours of England beginning in 1820. He composed more than one hundred and fifty works in the Romantic style, but fell into obscurity for most of the 20th century, but has experienced a rediscovery over the last few decades.
Edward Hughes (British 1832-1908), mid length portrait depicting a young lady wearing a white gown, oil on canvas (laid on board), 41cm x 56cm, signed and dated 1894 verso, gilt frame 52cm x 67cm. Condition - canvas has been cut down and stuck to board, signature and date is on a piece of canvas which has been stuck to reverse of board, no evidence of restoration, minor losses.
Paul O. Croeber (German, b.1874), half length portrait depicting Captain Lancelot Raimes of 5th Bn., Durham Light Infantry, Curate at Barnet, died of wounds in battle at Bailleul 1916, oil on canvas oval, 55cm x 64cm, signed and annotated verso, moulded frame 67cm x 86cm. Condition - craquelure and minor losses, canvas slack upper left, various wear to frame including split to bottom, losses etc.
A Victorian scrap book album circa 1865, presented from Robert Hindmarsh Grundy (1816-1865), to his niece Lucy Grundy on the occasion of her Birthday, wife to Thomas Leeming Grundy and later second wife to Edwin Landseer Grundy, son of the engraver John Clowes Grundy (1806-1867), godson and named after Sir Edwin Landseer (1803-1873), the album comprising mainly original watercolours and sketches by Edwin Landseer Grundy and Robert Hindmarsh Grundy among other works, verses and autographs, most notably an original hand written poem entitled 'The Ways of Heaven', addressed to Lucy Grundy from the Manchester poet Charles Swain (1801-1874), other notable works include a pencil sketch by William Wardlaw Laing and an untitled sketch depicting Laing playing the violin, a portrait depicting Lord Byron monogrammed R.H.G. and also signed by Lord Byron, a page of autographs including Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), over 100 pages, together with a further book of original sketches by Edwin Landseer Grundy depicting scenes mainly from maritime travel. Condition - embossed and gilt leather bound, gilt edge paper, 24cm x 29cm, lacking spine, most of the pages are still held together, the extra album of sketches has only one board,
* Cameron (Julia Margaret, 1815-1879). A Study of The Cenci, circa 1870, albumen print portrait of May Prinsep posing as Beatrice Cenci, wearing a patterned headscarf wrapped around her head and shoulders, 32 x 26 cm, pasted on board, framed and glazedQty: (1)NOTESNo other copies of this portrait have been located. Photographs of May Prinsep posing in a plain headscarf for the same study of The Cenci are found in Cox and Ford Catalogue Raisonné, nos. 409-412. These were photographed in 1870, two years after studies of the same subject by Kate Keown, nos. 988-989, seen wearing the same patterned headscarf. Beatrice Cenci was a 16th-century Roman woman who plotted the death of her tyrannical, abusive father, Count Francesco Cenci. The subsequent, lurid murder trial in Rome gave rise to an enduring legend about her. She was condemned and beheaded for the crime in 1599. A symbol to the people of Rome of resistance against the arrogant aristocracy, and the subject of a number of literary and musical works, notably Percy Bysshe Shelley's first drama The Cenci: A Tragedy in Five Acts (1819).

Portrait of Captain Richard Surtees Sherwood, Turkish Cavalry Contingent, 17th Bombay Lancers, circa 1855, albumen print, three-quarter length in regimental uniform with gouache highlighting, 19 x 15.5 cm, mounted as the centre of triptych with a pen and ink drawing en grisaille by Edward Wray mounted to the left, 17 x 25 cm, signed on the mount and captioned in ink 'The grave of Captain Sherwood at Arglie (?), Crimea, sketched on the spot by one of his friends', and with a true copy contemporary manuscript letter mounted to the right of the portrait, from R.J.H. Vivian, Lieutenant General Commanding Turkish Contingent, Headquarters, Kertch, 21 December 1855, to E.B. Ramsay, Secretary of State at the War Department, concerning the death of Captain Sherwood, 'This officer was engaged in a skirmish that took place on the 16th inst. between a detachment of our cavalry and a party of the Russian Cavalry, his gallantry in this affair was most conspicuous as is reported to me by the officers who commanded the detachment.
