There are some niggles to the board, espcially to the left hand side. The corners are rounded off due to wear and there is an approximate 2.5 inch creaseto the bottom left corner. The right corner has also beeb bent at some point.

Lady Mackay was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Inchcape, chairman of the shipping line P&O who also ran Inchape PLC and was director of many other companies. Lucy Mackay was educated in Switzerland, Cambridge and at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art, 1960–5, under David Talbot Rice and William Gillies, graduating with a master’s honours degree in fine art. In 1973–4 she completed a postgraduate illustration studies year at the Central School of Art and Design. She settled in Edinburgh where she studied advanced botanic illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden, and where as a member of the Scottish Arts Club from 1983 she regularly attended life studies. Mackay began her extensive teaching career in 1966 as art assistant at Edinburgh Academy for Boys; from 1968–76 taught art, design and pottery at schools in the London area; then again in Edinburgh at the Salisbury Centre, 1981–2. In 1999 she joined the register of Angus County’s artists-in-residence for primary schools, serving at several schools. After winning first prize in a portrait painting competition run by the magazine Nursery World, 1953, and exhibiting a prize painting in the Daily Mail competition to celebrate the opening of the Forth Road Bridge, 1964, Mackay took part in many group shows, including the RSA. Among later solo exhibitions were The Italian Institute, Edinburgh, 1991; Torrance Gallery, Edinburgh, 1995, 1998 and 2005; and The Forum, Ocean Terminal, Leith, in aid of the Bethany Trust, 2004. She travelled extensively in several continents with paints and sketch-book. As well as a series of self-portraits Mackay completed many portraits, including Ronald Fletcher, broadcaster, 1968; the Queen’s Counsel Lionel Daiches, 1979–80; singer Ian Caddy, 1980–1; Professor David Daiches with his brother Lionel, 1988–9; the composer and conductor Emre Araci, 1997; and cellist Harriet Johnson, 2000. Her work was held by collections including the Scottish National Portrait Gallery; London College of Music; Royal Over-Seas League; Scottish Arts Club; Barlinnie Prison; and Geffrye Museum.

* DEREK CLARKE MBE RSA RSW (BRITISH 1912 - 2014), IN THE PARK oil on canvas, signed and dated 1994unframed, as intendedoverall size 132cm x 132cmNote: Derek Clarke was born in Longthorpe near Peterborough on the last day of 1912. He was educated at Ampleforth College and attended Slade School of Art from1931-1935. At that time, the Slade's curriculum emphasised drawing as a tool for visual research, Seeing it as an authentic art form in its own right, not merely a preparation for subsequent painting. Slade students, under the influence of such luminaries as Henry Tonks and Augustus John, were encouraged to admire contemporary European painting, and look to the New English Art Club rather than the Royal Academy to exhibit. On leaving art college, and with no scholarship to support him, Derek earned a living by painting portraits. Indeed, it was a portrait commission that took him for the first time to the west coast of Ireland, where he worked hard to produce a large body of work-a personal artistic epiphany-among the Gaelic Speaking rural folk in Rossaveel, Connemara. He would return a year or two later to develop the theme she had begun there. On the day following declaration of WW2, Derek joined up for officer training in the Durham Light Infantry. He served in Tunisia, and, in 1943, was wounded in the spine. Back in London for a year's convalescence, Derek spent at least half his time painting. Not for him the dreary greys of wartime England, but, with a sparkling palette of vibrant colours, he flooded his canvases with bright imagery, winning admiration from Stanley Spencer for work he Showed at the New English Art Club, and Securing portrait commissions from such luminaries as the lranian Military Attache. Married by now to his first wife Ann, he lived the precarious life of wartime Londoners-the unimaginable daily brutality of the bombing and AK-AK fire, contrasting poignantly with concerts given by Dame Myra Hess in the National Galleries. Immediately the war was over, Derek returned to Connemara and to his fascination with the lives and characters in that wild landscape. Working at a furious rate, he amassed a substantial quantity of work. On returning to London with these canvases, however, he discovered that artistic tastes had changed radically. Bond Street Galleries and their patrons were less interested in images of Irish peasants, than in the new vogue for Surrealism and Abstraction. A true appreciation of this superb body of work had to wait until 2004 when it was exhibited in Dublin to much acclaim and the sale of all but a few of the paintings and drawings. By 1947, the Clarke family had expanded to include 4 young sons, and fortuitously at this time, Derek was invited by Robert Lyon, Principal of Edinburgh College of Art, keen to introduce new ideas in art teaching, to join the Staff of its Drawing and Painting School. The young tutor's colleagues included Robin Philipson (newly returned from a travelling scholarship) Alan Carr, Leonard Rosoman, a fellow Englishman who taught mural painting, Johnny Maxwell, and William Gillies, the Head of School. He retired in 1978 after 30 years teaching and continued to paint 'everyday that there is good light.’ In 2013, the RSA presented a retrospective of his long career to coincide with his 100th birthday. He later became a Senior Lecturer at the Cardiff School of Art in Wales, and had several solo and joint exhibitions at Gallery 67, Rawlinsky Gallery and the Belgrave Gallery, London. Like so many of the abstract painters of his generation - including his co-patriot Tony O’Malley - he joined the artists’ community in St. Ives, Cornwall, in the 1960s, remaining there until his death. After completing a Master of Fine Arts Degree at Rhodes University in South Africa, he swapped an earlier career as a portrait painter for his increasing interest in landscape and figure painting. This combination, found in his African Bus Stop series, often shares the humour and energy of the urban landscape. In 1989, he left Africa for the UK which has become the springboard for frequent and extensive travels to the subjects which move him most. Working in front of the motif, he will often shuttle the painting between the subject and the studio until it is resolved. The works from these journeys often refer in spirit to painters who have informed his progress towards abstract figuration from David Bomberg, Nicholas de Stael, Milton Avery and Willem de Kooning. Exhibiting broadly in the United Kingdom, he has also shown in America, Australia, South Africa and Europe.

After National Service, he studied at Leeds College of Art and then at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) where he was awarded post-graduate and major travel scholarships. On return from France and Italy he was invited to join the staff of ECA, where he taught drawing and painting from 1956 until 1988. In 1959 he was commissioned to paint the mural Christ in Glory in the Scottish Episcopal Church, St Columba-by-the-Castle, Edinburgh. A member of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), he served as President of the Society of Scottish Artists, (SSA) 1976-79. A life-long bird watcher and naturalist (at age 17 he was at the inaugural meeting of the Wharfdale Naturalists Society in 1945), he was a founder member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA). He led courses in Switzerland, Crete, the Falklands and Galapagos Islands, in Orkney and at Nature in Art in Gloucestershire, and in 1989 he began a Seabird Drawing course based at North Berwick. Now named after him, this has continued each year since, attracting participants from many parts of the world. He took part in projects with the Artists for Nature Foundation (ANF) in Holland, Poland, Spain, Ireland, India, Portugal and Israel, and in SWLA/Forestry Commission projects in the New Forest and in the oak woods in the west of Scotland. In 1991 he was filmed in Shetland for the Granada TV production “Portrait of the Wild – Summer‘. John Busby illustrated over 35 books about birds and animals, mostly about behaviour, ranging from seabirds and garden birds to tigers and otters, plus a book of poems by Kenneth Steven (Wild Horses) and many of the illustrations in The RSPB Anthology of Wildlife Poetry. His own books are mentioned elsewhere but also include a booklet Landscapes at the Edge of the Sea in 2010 with his rock pool paintings, and another for the first Curious Eye exhibition which he curated at the RSA in 2007. In 2009 he was declared "Master Wildlife Artist" by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin USA. He exhibited widely both at home and abroad and had a major retrospective exhibition at Bradford City Art Gallery in 1999/2000. More recently a retrospective exhibition, planned before his death, was held at Nature in Art, Gloucester in August 2015, and two large exhibitions to celebrate his landscapes (at the Royal Scottish Academy) and drawings (at The Scottish Gallery) were held in Edinburgh in June 2016, with another at the Wildlife Art Gallery in Lavenham, Suffolk in November 2017. In 2019 a major exhibition of his paintings was held during the Edinburgh Arts Festival, 29th July to 2nd September at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh.

"Like-for-like" auction prices for original paintings are usually difficullt to assess, but in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of April 2023, two Bellany paintings which had been acquired in our auctions in September and November 2014 were consigned for sale by the same owner. The original 2014 selling prices were £1800 and £4000 and the same paintings sold in April for £3800 and £7000 (all hammer prices). This equates to a growth in value of 86.2% in fewer than nine years. A pair of hardstone pendent earrings, circa 1950 Each agate sphere contained within a segmented cap, suspending a curb-link tassel, post fittings, length 4.3cm From the Private Collection of Yolette Leconte Magloire (1917-1981). Hence by descentYolette Leconte Magloire was First Lady of Haiti from 1950 to 1956. She was a direct descendant of Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806), the former slave who ultimately became leader of the Haitian Revolution, founder and leader of an independent Haiti. At just 19 years old, Yolette Leconte married Paul Eugene Magloire (1907-2001) who would become the 30th President of Haiti. The election in 1950 was the first in the nation's history where all adult males had a right to vote. After gaining office, Magloire oversaw women's suffrage being granted. During his presidency, Haiti became one of the most popular Caribbean destinations for American and European tourists. Magloire and Leconte emphasised public works and cultural projects during this time. In 1951, the Madame Paul E. Magloire Foundation was created to establish two solid educational and professional training institutions for young girls in Haiti, L'ecoles des arts menagers of Saint Martin and Cap-Haitien. Yolette Leconte Magloire was also known for her charity banquets and balls, the proceeds of which were used to fund hospitals and orphanages.  Magloire's anti-communist position helped create close ties with the U.S. In early 1955, Leconte and Magloire were invited on a State Visit to Washington D.C. They were welcomed by then Vice President Richard Nixon and were received by President Eisenhower at the White House.  Also see lots 149-167. These earrings are clearly visible in a portrait of Yolette Leconte Magloire done by the African-American artist Lois Mailou Jones (1905-1998), an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance movement. Her connection with Haiti developed through her husband, Louis Vergniaud Pierre-Noel, who was a prominent Haitian artist whom she meet while they were both studying at Columbia University, New York. Already an established artist, in 1954 she was a guest professor at the Centre D'Art and Foyer des Artes Plastiques in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. While there, she was invited by the Haitian government to capture the local people and the country's landscapes through her painting. She completed over forty two paintings there, which became representative of her most well known works. Yolette Leconte Magloire sponsored Jones' exhibition Oeuvres des Loïs Mailou Jones Pierre-Noël where the breadth of her work was shown. The portrait of Leconte featuring these earrings as well as the bracelet (lot 149) was one of a pair, the other being of her husband President Paul Magloire and was actually commissioned by US President Dwight D.
