A fine late Victorian letter box, with slatted sides and gable roof, the door painted with a sentry, the hinged metal slot inscribed Letters, 43cm high/see illustration/Provenance: Plas Gwyn, Anglesey Condition Report: Generally in good condition. Letter aperture loose. Sentry portrait in good condition. Box is locked and there is no key, therefore interior has not been examined.

[WATERLOO BATTLE OF]: KEMPT JAMES (c.1765-1854) British General during the Napoleonic Wars. Kempt led a British brigade at the Battle of Waterloo. Governor General of Canada 1828-30. A.L.S., Sir James Kempt, in the third person, one page, 8vo, South Street, 11th May 1849, to Mr. Webber. Kempt states that he feels flattered by his correspondent's wish to include Kempt's portrait in a work he is about to publish, although remarks that as he has 'declined similar applications which have been made to him' he cannot comply with Webber's request. Bold ink signature (‘George R’) as King on a small piece, slightly irregularly clipped (just touching the first letter of the signature). Neatly mounted and matted in white beneath a small portrait to an overall size of 5.5 x 6.5. Together with George II (1683-1760) King of Great Britain and Ireland 1727-60. Good ink signature (‘George R’) as King at the head of an oblong 8vo piece neatly removed from the head of a manuscript document from the Treasury and bearing five lines of text referring to John Selwyn Sr. Some light age wear, G to VG, 2
DERBY EARL OF: (1799-1869) British Prime Minister 1852, 1858-59, 1866-68. A.L.S., Lord Derby, in the third person, one page, 8vo, St. James’s Square, 25th February 1866, to Mr. Clowes. Derby states that he has for some years ‘felt it necessary to decline presiding, or even being present at, any Anniversary Dinners or public meetings’ and therefore feels unable to comply with his correspondent’s request on behalf of the committee of a Pension Corporation, although encloses a cheque for £20 (no longer present) in favour of the funds of the Corporation. With blank integral leaf. Together with a small selection of signed photographs of various sizes (10 x 8 and slightly smaller), T.L.S. (1) etc., by various other British Prime Ministers comprising David Lloyd George (signed piece laid down to an album page, with an affixed magazine portrait etc.), Edward Heath (2) and Harold Wilson.
