Early 18th century English School, oil on canvas, Portrait of a gentleman wearing a lace stock, 74 x 62cmCONDITION: Oil on canvas, re-lined many years ago, canvas remains tight, paint a little dirty with fine but stable craquelure throughout. It would benefit from a clean, tiny amount of scuffing near the lower left margin. A few small paint specks, probably re-touched, particularly at the corners where it is painted to the oval. 19th century English School, oil on canvas, Portrait of a lady wearing a white dress and tartan bonnet, 59 x 46cmCONDITION: Relatively recently cleaned and re-lined, canvas tight but has a slight inward bulge, fine craquelure running through much of the paint particularly all the whites and flesh tones. Probably re-touched around the margins and perhaps also to the bonnet and feather plume. Later frame.

* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), THE PORTRAIT OF JOHN STEPHENS ORR (PORTRAIT OF A PORTRAITIST) oil on linen, signed 112cm x 112cm Framed. Labels verso: James Bourlet & Sons Ltd, 17-18 Nassau Street; London together with handwritten artist label inscribed with title, artist's name and address. Note: John Stephens Orr (1907 - 1990) was a famous Glasgow photographer with an interest in people and motor cars. Practicing between 1930 and 1970 in Glasgow's Langside and later at No. 4 Somerset Place, Charing Cross, he became known for his portraits of society figures in magazines such as Scottish Field . His usual subjects were judges, high profile lawyers, the aristocracy and controversial music hall characters. Orr also photographed some internationally famous celebrities and captains of industry, all visitors to Glasgow. Orr wore a distinctive kilt and photographed in a portrait style similar to Yousuf Karsh. "He recorded the last glimmers of a confident Scottish society in flamboyant style" His later life was spent with his wife, Jenny, on the Scottish Clyde coast island of Cumbrae. His many subjects included Paul Robeson — Singer and black activist, Dame Marie Rambert — Founder of Ballet Rambert, Marc Chagall — Painter, Clare Bloom - Actress, Richard Burton — Actor, Stanley Baxter — Comedian, Jacques Tati — Film maker, Paul Tortelier — Cellist, David Brown - Aston Martin cars, William Lyons - Jaguar, Austin cars, Walter Owen Bentley - Rolls Royce/Bentley cars and no doubt, Alexander Goudie - Artist.
THE LONDON POLICE (BRITISH CONTEMPORARY), ALL HAIL GRANDAD STEVE ink and acrylic on linen, signed verso 40cm x 30cm Unframed Note: The London Police is an art collective started in 1998 when two English geezers headed to Amsterdam to rejuvenate the visually disappointing streets of Holland's capital. They were part of a small group of artists at the end of the last century that helped pioneer the street art movement. After a few years of mixing travelling and making art in the street TLP began to receive worldwide recognition for their contribution to the graffiti/street art movement. Some 22 years on TLP have amassed more than 100 shows and events in over 35 countries and their street work continues to pop up everywhere they go. The London Police are Chaz Barrisson who draws the iconic ‘LADS’ character and Bob Gibson whose tight portrait and architectural illustrations help marry the two styles to create an endearing, exciting fantasy world... The approximate retail value is £900 Generously donated by The London Police. The proceeds of sale from this lot will benefit The Glasgow Children's Hospital Appeal.
* PETER HOWSON OBE (SCOTTISH b 1958), SELF PORTRAIT oil on canvas, signed 61cm x 53cm Framed. Note: a powerful and intimate self-portrait, dated from 2001, relates closely to the central figures in two of Howson's epic large-scale pieces - The First Step and The Third Step – from around the same period: a series which chronicles the artist's struggles with addiction through a hedonistic lifestyle, prior to converting to Christianity and his subsequent recovery. The artist depicts himself cautiously glancing at the observer, vulnerable and exposed.
