"Peasant Woman on Horseback"Oil on canvas. Signed. On the back some patches can be seen which are the result of some minor restoration.77,5 x 55,5 cm.Carlos Vázquez Úbeda was a prominent Spanish painter, illustrator, and poster artist, renowned for his creations in the genres of costumbrismo (depicting local customs) and landscape. This "Hijo predilecto" (Favorite Son) of Ciudad Real was a disciple of the landscape artist Carlos Haes, whom he met at the National School of San Fernando in Madrid, and the portrait painter Léon Bonnat, following the classes he received in Paris, where he resided between 1889 and 1898.As reported by the Prado Museum, he "regularly sent his works to national and foreign competitions," winning numerous awards and decorations. Highlights of these are the first place medal he received at the Exhibition of Fine Arts and Artistic Industries of Barcelona in 1898, the first place medal in 1910 from the National School of Fine Arts in Madrid for "El torero herido" (The Wounded Bullfighter), one of his most well-known paintings, currently kept in the Prado (inv. P006803). He also received the prestigious gold medal in 1913 at the Salon de Paris for "Luna de miel en Anso" (Honeymoon in Anso), now housed in The Hispanic Museum (inv. A307).Another painting to highlight is "Recolección de higos chumbos en Granada" (Harvesting Prickly Pears in Granada) (c. 1901, inv. P006307), where he employs a contrapuntal perspective, which is similar to that of the painting we have here. Reference bibliography:- Museo del Prado. Edgar Chahine - Au Bois de Boulogne - 1931 / Description: PARIS / AU BOIS DE BOULOGNE - 1931. Reference: Tabelli n°420 (fourth state). Top subject from the elegant Paris life style / Dimensions: 21,90 x 32,00 cm / Condition: A very good impression on thick quality paper watermarked Arches. In excellent condition. / Literature: Tabanelli 420 IV --- Edgar Chahine (1874 Vienna- 1947, Paris) Edgar Chahine was born to Armenian parents in 1874, and spent his youth in Constantinople. * Before moving to Paris in 1895, he visited Venice where he studied under Paoletti and at the Academia di Belle Arti. In the late 1890's he began making intaglio prints, frequently mixing media in order to achieve the desired effects. The support of Edmond Sagot and Eugene Delâtre encouraged Chahine to continue making prints, all of which were characterized by a precise use of line. He approached his subjects with an honest, selective eye, and was neither patronizing nor sentimental in his interpretation of life around him. Through his objective portrayal of the petite bourgeois, Chahine gave to us a portrait of an era. * Chahine truly loved printmaking. He worked in etching, drypoint and aquatint and combined all these media. One of the popular aspects of his work centers on elegant ladies, the "femmes" of the Fin de Siècle—They are society women, performers, café habitues, "femmes fatales," shopkeepers. Chahine is known also for his delicate landscapes and seascapes which remind us of Whistler. * In the book Impressions d'Italie, published in 1906, Chahine turned his attention to the streets and inhabitants of Venice. The series, which consisted of 50 prints, includes some of Chahine's best work. A fire in Chahine's studio, and a flood in 1942, accounts for the rarity of this artist's work. / Medium: Etching, dry-point /Circa: 1931 260

Aegidius Sadeler II (1570-1629) - Matthias Emperor - 1614 Impressive elaborate large Portrait of Emperor Matthias, bust to right on a pedestal, surrounded by a garland containing ten medallions with portraits of Emperors, including Rudolph II and Maximillian II. The Allegorical Portrait of the Hapsburg Emperor Matthias is a large, extravagant composition, full of political iconography and playful illusionism. The naturalistic likeness of Matthias is set upon a fictive sculpted bust with draped shoulders and pedestal. The composition is embedded with personifications, beginning with two figures representing Wisdom and Fortitude who carry flags with the emperor's emblems at the upper corners. At top center, cherubs carry the imperial crown down from heaven, while the Three Graces shower flowers and gold upon the emperor. At the sides, figures of Mercury and Minerva, posed like the famed statues of the Dioscuri in Rome, tame Pegasus (a common symbol of Virtue) and spear the dragon of Religious Heresy. Below, the diverse subjects of the empire and its Turkish foes kneel in homage. 56,40 x 40,00 cm A good but trimmed impression with lower part with tablet and text line cut of. Mounted on a support sheet and framed. Minory defects but mainly very good. Hollstein / Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts c.1450-1700 (310) Engraving 1614 1500

Cornelis Galle (1576-1650) - Portrait of Carolus Quintus after Titian Portrait of Emperor Charles V (1500-1558). Charles was the eldest son of Philip the Handsome and Joan of Castile, who would enter history as Joan the Mad. The countries he ruled, the Spanish Empire, together formed the largest European empire since that of Charlemagne. In fact, his entire empire, so including the American and Asian territories, was even larger than the earlier Roman Empire and it can rightly be called one of the first world empires of the New Age. In this bust portrait, he is shown in profile. The light reflects on his shining armor. We also recognize the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The Subscript "En fulminanti similis inuic ta Herculis, Ultra labores arma sic Carolis tulit" links to the motto of arms 'Plus Ultra' chosen by Emperor Charles V. It was a variation on 'Non plus ultra', the text Hercules is said to have chiselled on the Pillars of Hercules on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar to mark the end of the world in classical antiquity. Under Charles's reign, Spain experienced tremendous colonial expansion and with the new motto, he wanted to indicate that the Strait of Gibraltar was no longer the end of the world and that Spain's ambitions extended further. 22,00 x 17,00 cm Excellent condition, nice dark sharp print, clearly defined plate edges. With full plate border and wide margins in the full sheet of watermarked laid paper (Weapon of Amsterdam) Hollstein / Dutch and Flemish etchings, engravings and woodcuts c.1450-1700 (133) Engraving 1630-1650 220
