The name of the publisher appears at the bottom of the spine of all volumes except the index. Complete in seven volumes. All large fold-out maps present (one loosely inserted). Volume three has the rare suppressed plate of Major-General A. Fitzroy Hart (loosely inserted) as well as the replacement portrait. The even scarcer leaflet with instructions for the insertion of the corrected plate (see photo) is also included with the set. Top and lower edge inside dj re-inforced with brown paper strip. Dark green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Slightly scuffed on lower edge of spine. Front and back endpapers show some foxing, but all inner pages very clean and bright. Neat bookplate on front paste-sown endpaper. Frontispiece colour portrait of General Smuts. Copiously illustrated with b/w photographs, sketches, line drawings of botanical details, folding maps, full-page maps to illustrate regional distributions and regions visited by the author. Pages i-xii pp 1-686 An account of Hutchinson`s botanical expeditions to various parts of Africa. The author`s background as a botanical specialist from Kew was well known, and in South Africa he was given friendly reception by eminent South African botanists. But it was his association with General Smuts, himself a botanist of note, that makes this book so interesting. Smuts accompanied him across the Limpopo to Zimbabwe and Tanganyika. These volumes are numbered 669. Dark brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on spine. Covers in very good condition, no bumping or wear to corners or surfaces. Top and front page edges slightly spotted. Some foxing spots on endpapers. Otherwise book is clean and fold-out maps are undamaged but have some foxing on front fold edges. Red cloth covers with gilt decoration on front and titles on front and spine. First edition. A record of travel and discovery in Central Africa. Red cloth boards with gilt on front and spine, ex library copy with usual stamps but no cards, light foxing throughout, front and rear hinges cracked but intact, shaken. A piece of history comes with this title in the form of a Presentation Card which is glued to the inside front: `Presented by W.H. Struben, Esq.` Harry Struben and his brother Fred discovered gold on the farm Wilgespruit at the western end of the Witwatersrand in 1884. The area is today called Roodepoort. They were the first to strike gold and are righfully regarded as South Africa`s gold mining pioneers. In 1886 the Executive Council of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek announced in an official document that W.H. Struben is considered the real discoverer of the Witwatersrand gold fields. 1880-1900 (circa) engraved facsimile sheet of 32 impressions (8x4) the left & right halves identical, se-tenant rows of 8 of 1847 1d POST OFFICE, 1848-59 1d POST PAID early and worn impressions plus 1859 Sherwin re-engraved 2d, all in blue, on thick carton paper, the four engravings in each half are derived from a single die but then re-touched to produce differences in the portrait/background/shading/corner ornaments.
