VICTORIEN-ANTOINE BASTET (1852-1905), A TERRACOTTA BUST OF A YOUNG GIRL DATED 1881 Signed to reverse Bastet Paris 1881 61cm high, 47cm wide The son of a peasant family from the Vaucluse, as a child Bastet was a shepherd boy and it was only at the age of nineteen that he went to Avignon to study at the Ecole de Dessin. In 1874 he received a grant which allowed him to move to Paris where he studied at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts under Dumont and Thomas. He became a protege of Aime Millet and made his debut at the Salon of 1879. Bastet was a popular portrait sculptor and his state commissions include a bust of the painter Pierre Parrocel for Avignon and a group of terracotta medallions in the Musee de Toulon. This terracotta may perhaps be identified with his terracotta bust of Mademoiselle P. L., exhibited at the Salon in 1882 and the Exposition Nationale in the following year. Simon-Bernard Lenoir (French, 1729-1798) Portrait of Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet, 1694-1778), circa 1764inscribed verso 'Le Noir:pinxit'oil on canvas44 x 35cmProvenance:Within the present vendor's family for at least 90 yearsThis engaging, re-discovered portrait represents an important addition to the contemporary iconography of the renowned French Enlightenment writer François-Marie Arouet, known by his nom de plume Voltaire. Simon-Bernard Lenoir exhibited a pastel portrait of Voltaire at the Salon de l'Académie de Saint Luc, Paris, in 1764, believed to have been commissioned by Voltaire's friend, the actor Lekain (now in the Princeton University Art Museum, No. 2019-5). Although compositionally close to the pastel, the present oil on canvas, slightly smaller in scale, differs notably in the colour and style of Voltaire's jacket as well as the inclusion of delicate details, such the sitter's wig powder falling upon his shoulder, which give this painting a more immediate and lifelike feel and suggest it was made from first hand observation.Although primarily known as a pastelist, Lenoir also executed portraits in oil and is known to have repeated compositions in both mediums. The soft palette, sensitive handling (indicative of an artist familiar with pastel), closeness in style to known paintings by Lenoir and the inscription to the reverse of the relined canvas - likely replicating the artist's signature to the original canvas - all support a conclusive attribution of the present work to Lenoir's brush. The year 1764, also the presumed date of this portrait, was a significant one for Voltaire as it saw the publication of the Dictionnaire Philosophique, one of his best known philosophical works.
Attributed to Arthur James Lewis (British, 1824–1901) Portrait of an young girl in orientalist peacock headdresssigned and dated with initials A.L. and dated (18)67 (lower left)inscribed verso 'By Arthur Lewis'watercolour with gum arabic42.5 x 33.5cmArthur James Lewis was a successful haberdasher and silk merchant (of the firm Lewis & Allenby), who married the actress Kate Terry. Despite being an amateur artist, his undeniable talent meant that he exhibited widely at the Royal Academy, British Institution and Grosvenor Gallery. In an overall clean condition with the colour pigment having retained very well in the majority of areas. The is a large scratch to the paper located to the lefr left next to the initials, measuring approximately 10cm. The gum abrabic does show visible signs of craquelure, but seems to be stable. The watercolour has not been examined out of the frame.
§ Fernand Toussaint (Belgian, 1873-1955) Portrait of a girl holding flowerssigned 'FToussaint' and dated 'Aout [18]90'oil on canvas60 x 50cmThe present painting is likely to be a very early work by the artist who is known to have begun studying with Jean-François Portaels at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Brussels, at the age of just fifteen.84 x 73cm framed
Attributed to Mather Brown (American, 1761-1831) An Officer of the Berkshire Regiment of Fencible Cavalry, or Windsor Foresters, circa 1794-1800 oil on canvas220 x 120cmProvenance:Traditionally said to have been acquired in Parma, Italy, according to the previous owner, His sale, Cheffins, Cambridge, 4th March 2015, Lot 596, where acquired by the present ownerThe sitter in the present portrait was an officer of The Berkshire Regiment of Fencible Cavalry, otherwise known as the "Windsor Foresters" as identified by the title scroll on his helmet. The Fencibles were raised 1st May 1794 for service within Britain and consisted of six troops under the command of Colonel Charles Rooke. They were primarily defensive units usually based within garrisons or on patrol and spent majority of their time in Scotland, where their main role was to be a front line of defence against French invasion from the Bonaparte regime. They were disbanded circa 1799-1800 and their uniform was by permission of King George III taken over by the Wargrave Rangers. Most of the regiment were volunteers, often landowners or nobility. There were approximately twenty officers in the Fencibles as of June 1797, which is around the time this picture was painted. However, their lack of recorded iconography makes the identification of the sitter a difficult task.Nevertheless, stylistically this magnificent military swagger portrait can be attributed to the American-born portrait painter Mather Brown and represents a significant addition to his known oeuvre. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Mather Brown was to become a prominent portrait and historical painter who made his career in England. The handling, scale and composition are closely comparable with Brown's full-length portraits of Frederick Augustus (1763–1827), Duke of York (Waddesden Manor) and Sir John Eamer (1750–1823), Lord Mayor of London (Guildhall Art Gallery). We are grateful to Christopher Bryant for identifying the regiment of the sitter.241.5 x 142cm framed

English School (19th century) Portrait miniature of a lady, believed to be Clementina Dundas Bruce (1785-1861), daughter of Major General Thomas Dundas, Governor of Guadeloupe inscribed verso with the identity of the sitter watercolour on ivory 7 x 6cm Provenance: By descent within the family of Sir William Foster, 1st Baronet of Norwich (1798–1874), to Janet Foster, 8 Stanley Crescent, London, W11 This item is offered for sale in accordance with the Ivory Act 2018 and has been assigned an exemption certificate Ref No: 2C7WV2K5
Attributed to Charles Bainville (French, d. 1745) Portrait of an officer, head and shoulders, in a red coat and armoured breastplate signed or inscribed to the reverse ‘Bainville. f 1692’ / Francois de Br[un?] Capitain [D’une force / Infanterie Quitte De Service de 1692?] …' oil on canvas 69.5 x 56cm The present work appears to be a rare painting by Charles Bainville, a little known French artist, recorded by Benezit. Born in Provence, Bainville is also believed to have been a poet and a relative of the distinguished poet and critic Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux (1636-1711). The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane, it is unconfirmed if the painting is lined, the back of the canvas appears to have some age. The paint layers have a prominent network of age cracks. There are some losses that have been restored but are still evident in the surface texture. Overpaint is present across the surface, but this is fairly well matched to the original. The varnish is glossy and clear with a light layer of surface dirt.80 x 67cm framed
Hugh Douglas Hamilton (Irish, 1739-1808) Portrait of a lady in a white dress inscribed 'Portrait in Pastel of / Madame Vigee Le Brun / by herself' on an old label verso pastel 24 x 19cm Although once thought to be a self-portrait by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, the present work can be conclusively attributed, based on style and composition, to Hugh Douglas Hamilton. The unusual muslin flowing from the sitter's dress give the work a historiated tone and suggest the pastel is not a conventional portrait but that the sitter depicted could be in the guise of a deity or dancer. We are grateful to Neil Jeffares for his assistance in cataloguing this lot on the basis of photographs. Pastel in excellent, clean condition with no deterioration to the pigment or damage to the paper apparent. Unexamined out of frame. 34 x 29cm framed

Attributed to Giovanni Battista Cipriani RA (Italian, 1727-1785) Portrait of Frederica Augusta Schaub, Mrs William Lock, with her children William Lock the Younger and Charles Lockoil on canvas35.5 x 30.5cmProvenance:Presumably by descent through the sitter's granddaughter, Elizabeth Blake (née Lock), Lady Wallscourt (1806-1877),The Collection of Lord Wallscourt (according to a label on the reverse); With Sabin Galleries London (as Giovanni Battista Cipriani)Frederica Augusta Schaub (1750-1832) was the daughter of the celebrated 18th century diplomat Sir Luke Schaub. In 1767 she married William Lock (1732-1810), a noted art collector and patron who, before his marriage, had travelled with Richard Wilson from Venice to Rome and later employed Giovanni Battista Cipriani, George Barrett, Sawrey Gilpin and Benedetto Pastorini to decorate interiors at Norbury Park which he purchased in 1774.Indeed, the Locks were artistically very well connected and were both later painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence. It is likely that this intimate portrait was executed by a painter closely linked with the family, such as Wilson or Cipriani, who based the work on earlier Italian models of the Madonna and Child with the Infant St John the Baptist; an etching by Cipriani of that subject (see Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1985-52-14400) is close in composition to the present picture. The two children depicted are William Lock the Younger (1767-1847), who would himself become a successful artist, a pupil and friend of Fuseli, and Charles Lock (1770-1804), later the British consul-general in Naples during the Neapolitan Revolution of 1799. Both sons were also subsequently painted by Lawrence.
