This, the second edition, includes updated information including a 6 page preface by C. G. Oates.
Suzanne Valadon, French 1865-1938 - Nu; graphite on paper, laid down on card, signed lower left 'Suzanne Valadon', with partial stamp of Gustave Coquiot Rue de Moscou Paris (8e) on the reverse of the mount, 19.3 x 11.3 cm Note: Valadon began modelling in 1880 for artists including Theophile Steinlen, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec who painted a portrait of her. A self-taught artist, she observed these artists around her and befriended Edgar Degas who purchased and encouraged her work. Nudes were a common subject matter for Valadon, often more realistic and honest than her male contemporaries.

Marcel Delmotte, Belgian 1901-1984 - Portrait of a woman, 1943; oil on panel, signed and dated lower right 'M. DELMOTTE 1943', 122.5 x 91.5 cm (ARR) Note: Delmotte was considered to be a realist painter for the first part of his artistic career, influenced by the models of the Italian Renaissance, as well as Rubens and Ingres. The present portrait is of this early period, where the realism and almost sculptural form of the sitter can be seen. By the 1950s he turned towards a more symbolic style creating compositions with surreal landscapes and futuristic architectures.

Franta Belsky FRBS, Czech/British 1921-2000 - Pegasus and child; bronze with marble base, signed, numbered and stamped with foundry mark on bronze base 'F Belsky 2/1 Meridian Bronze London', H41 x W27.3 x D12.2 cm including marble base (ARR) Note: the artist fled to the UK during the Second World War. In the UK he had numerous public commissions, including portraits of Lord Louis Mountbatten for Horse Guards Parade and Andrew Bourne Cunningham for Trafalger Square. He also created a bust of Sir Winston Churchill for public display in Prague. He also created portraits of John Piper (now in the collection of Pallant House Gallery) and Queen Elizabeth II (National Portrait Gallery).
