Catherine Hyland The Future of Farming IV, 2025 Archival Pigment Inkjet Signed on Verso with COA 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Catherine Hyland is an artist based in London. She graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design with a First class BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art and completed her Masters at the Royal College of Art. Her photography centres around people and their connection to the land they inhabit. Primarily landscape based, her work is rooted in notions of fabricated memory, grids, enclosures and national identity. Her large format images depict humanity's attempts - some more effective than others - to tame its environment. An observation that has led to both artistic and commercial outreach, with residences at venues such as Focal Point gallery in Southend for the RADICAL ESSEX programme and has exhibited work at Month of Photography Los Angeles, Renaissance Photography Prize, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Photographic Society, LES MAGASINS GÉNÉRAUX, Somerset House, Design Museum in London, ICA & MAC in Birmingham. Hyland's ongoing projects highlight humanity's attempts to tame and transform nature, both past and present. You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Sarah Hills (Spanner in the works) Madame de Pompadour, 2025 Oil on paper (varnished) Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Sarah Hills' work references the notion that the places we have lived and experienced in the past exist within us and can impact how we perceive the elusive nature and progress of time. From the archives of memory certain cherished objects, quotidian motifs and borrowed and appropriated images are reimagined to create charged psychological spaces that suggest unexpected narratives and reflect a disorientating search for meaning. At times deeply personal, the work also seeks to find a universal language and meaning through metaphor and humour. The imagery of voids and empty spaces, suggests transitional moments and inevitably leads to thoughts of one's own departure. Ellen Starr Lyon Front Door Stripes, 2024 Gouache on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Ellen Starr Lyon, b. 1974 in Columbus, Indiana. Lyon is a figurative painter focusing on modern portraiture that revolves around feminism, motherhood, and coming of age. Her naturalist painting style incorporates a colourful palette and multiple thin, luminous layers capturing her models in natural light. Lyon uses her own photography to catch unguarded moments that are translated into oil paintings showing glimpses of emotion on the faces of those around her. Lyon champions vulnerability as strength while showing it as our common language. Her Red Glove Series depicts her teenage daughter wearing bright red rubber gloves and a defiant expression to talk about the next generation's fight for reproductive rights. She has work in the permanent collection of the Evansville Museum, UC Irvine, and Indiana University. Lyon has been invited to the Pouch Cove Artist Residency in July of 2024. Catherine Chambers First hand, 2025 Acryic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Catherine Chambers is a figurative artist who documents poignant moments, often from her experiences of living abroad in Ethiopia and the Middle East. Catherine is inspired by environments and their inhabitants, capturing intimate moments of connectedness. However, as with all good portraiture, there is more than meets the eye to her work. These works ask the viewer to confront the complicated dynamics of love, care and identity. This is Catherine's second time working with Art on a Postcard. Her previous contributions zoomed in on feet from her larger paintings. This time, Catherine has created postcards looking at the hands in existing works of hers. Education 2009-2012 BA (Hons) Drawing and Applied Arts, University of the West of England, Bristol, UK Solo Exhibitions 2019 I Appreciate You, The Embassy of Ethiopia, London 2016 A Brother's Progress, Freespace Gallery, Kentish Town, London Red Lodge Chair, Red Lodge Museum, Park Row, Bristol Possession(s), The Tobacco Factory, Bristol Group Exhibitions 2024 Herbert Smith Freehills Award, National Portrait Gallery, London Women In Art Finalists, The Roundhouse, London RBA Rising Stars, Royal Over-Seas League, London Wells Contemporary Art, Wells Cathedral, Wells A Personal Treasure, The Nunnery Gallery, London 2023 Missed Letters, Making Space Gallery, London New Wave, Spitalfields Studios, London Awe and Wonder, Chaiya Art Awards, Oxo Gallery, London 2022 Football Art Prize, Millennium Gallery, Sheffield Galvanise, Spitalfields Studios, London Art on a Postcard, The Bomb Factory, London 2021 Summer Show, Royal Academy of Arts, London Sunny Art Prize, Sunny Art Centre, London 2020 Summer Exhibition, Green and Stone Gallery, London 2018 Summer Show, Royal Academy of Arts, London Awards 2024 3rd Prize for The Herbert Smith Freehills Prize at the National Portrait Gallery Royal Society of British Artists Rising Star Women in Art Prize finalist Gallery Representation Mall Galleries, London, UK Statement About AOAP Submitted Artwork Fly is a cropped detail from a larger painting currently being exhibited at the Mall Galleries annual Royal Society of British Artists exhibition. The painting continues a conversation Catherine introduced with her painting "Lying" which won third prize at the National Portrait Gallery in 2024. In this painting, the same sitter holds a bird securely; as it is, the bird cannot fly despite being born to do so. Catherine wants the audience to contemplate, if you have something (could be a relationship, land, artefacts...) but you have it by force or deceit, do you really have it at all? And is it still worth having? Class is a cropped detail from Catherine's larger painting "Between Classes". The girl chooses colours to fill the outlines of a princess. The postcard questions how the girl came to choose those specific colours and how they differ to the girls own image. The work explores ideas of care, influence and status; how they overlap, interact and differ. Fortune is a detail from Catherine's larger painting "Nafkot (Yeabsra)". A child holds a popular paper game, commonly known as a chatterbox or fortune teller. It was introduced to the girl by Catherine in an exchange of sharing games local to one and foreign to another. Games are a recurring theme in Catherine's work, highlighting how unlevel the playing field is in real life. First Hand is a detail from Catherine's larger painting "Holding Space". The hand is of a dear friend of the artist, and celebrates a friendship that challenges outside expectations. It is a prompt to think for oneself and to learn from trusted resources. Georgie Huxley Some Kind of Mystical Shade, 2025 Pencil on card Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Georgie Huxley (b. 2000) is a painter based in London. A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, her work explores themes of connection, solitude, and nostalgia. Using personal archives as source material, their paintings evoke a quiet tension between presence and absence, offering contemplative reflections on the complexities of human experience. These drawings were inspired by As of Right Now, a performance choreographed by Nicola (@nicolaadilman), where movement, visual art, and storytelling intersect. While I typically work in paint, I chose to use pencil for these pieces, echoing my use of charcoal in the live performance. I appreciate the impermanence of charcoal in the performance, and pencil allowed me to capture a similar transient, delicate energy in these still moments of Nicola's dance. In As of Right Now, I'm drawing Nicola, alongside Ushara Dilrukshan (ushara_x), live while she dances. The photographs that inspired these drawings were taken by Michelle Rose (@romifolder), whose exceptional eye and artistry have profoundly influenced these drawings. Romifolder's photography beautifully captures the raw emotion and intensity of the moment, allowing me to explore the delicate balance of vulnerability and strength in Nicola's movements. Chloe Le Tissier Roll-in, 2025 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Working across acrylic, oil, watercolour and gouache, Chloe's paintings re-examine the familiar, with a nostalgic sense of the bittersweet passing of time. Searching for order in chaos, an effort to capture the everyday, poignant and fleeting moment. 'Roll-in' considers a scenario which is at once static and moving, poignant and emotive. Emboldened by the challenge, she quietly waits her turn to join the track. 'Pool at Dusk' The pool is off-limits from dusk until dawn. The water, still and calm, allows the lights to settle and reflect. They illuminate the surrounding foliage and create a tranquil moment on a warm summer evening. 'Saturday' An everyday moment caught in the mirror periodically, over the years. I notice time passing with every frame. It catches me by surprise. You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Alexandra Beteeva Anechka, 2024 Pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Alexandra Beteeva (b.1999) creates nostalgic paintings, prints and drawings tinged with intimacy and innocence. Interested in post-Soviet spaces and a process of presenting history in the form of personal and collective memory, she asks what it means to be homesick for a home one never had. Motivated by themes of immersion, the Caucasus becomes an interesting space to explore. Alexandra works with the archive, images that help to see and understand the past more accurately, as during excavations, the missing but suddenly found part of the object makes the idea of it whole. Alma Haser MS, 2024 Photographic print on paper Signed COA 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Born in 1989 into an artistic family in the Black Forest, Germany, Alma Haser is now based in SouthEast England. She is known for her complex and meticulously constructed portraiture, which are influenced by her creativity and her background in fine art. Alma creates striking work that catches the eye and captivates the mind. Expanding the dimensions of traditional portrait photography, Alma takes her photographs further by using inventive paper-folding techniques, collage and mixed media to create layers of intrigue around her subjects; manipulating her portraits into futuristic paper sculptures and blurring the distinctions between two-dimensional and three-dimensional imagery. Since having children her work has evolved and adapted to the time constraints she now faces. With that in mind, she uses techniques that are therapeutic and meditative, such as needle work and fabrics. Alma has won many awards for her work, including Magenta Foundation's Bright Spark Award for her Cosmic Surgery series (also the basis of a successful self-published book project). Her piece The Ventriloquist won forth prize for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery. Alma also won the PDN Photo Annual Award for her Eureka Effect series. Her work has been exhibited worldwide. Alma's current projects include Within 15 Minutes, a series delving into her fascination with identical twins, they're genetics and how to distinguish them using jigsaw puzzles. She's also been working on her Pseudo series; an exploration of what is real and what is manufactured, through using her unique paper collage layering and re-photographing techniques. Catherine Chambers Class, 2025 Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Catherine Chambers is a figurative artist who documents poignant moments, often from her experiences of living abroad in Ethiopia and the Middle East. Taking the male body as a subject and my partner as a model, I place myself in the empowered position of the painter, redefining the idea of the "muse" from the first act of painting. I play with the depiction of the male body as an attempt to subtly challenge notions of beauty and masculinity, exploring its representation through the classical painting aesthetics of figuration and still life. Each work is an attempt to question the subjectivity of the body in relation with the stereotypes of the gender, by pushing the visual boundaries on the depiction of its shapes, cropping, submitting or objecting the body. Concepts of love and control, agency, and intimacy come across my practice creating and entangled web of images directly related to my lived experiences. By exploring the male figure, I get to experiment with all the decisions that depicting someone else's body implies, and to get a deeper understanding on my own power role in the process. In the work, I seek to analyse the ways in which we experience the other's body, playing with the nuances in between comfort and consent. From extreme body positions to the juxtaposition with other elements used as symbolic prompts, I have been producing images that deliberately challenge normative ideas of what masculinity might be, as well as purposely complicating and undermining them. In my most recent practice, I am interested on how male-gazed narratives have limited our perspective and understanding of the world. By visually prioritizing seemingly insignificant objects, I aim to give voice to the untold and break away from a singular worldview. The vases-objects that can be filled, carried, or destroyed- act as symbols to re-signify the male form just by placing them together. Reclaiming the classical painting language, I depict these elements to question the gaze and examine the given narratives that shape our visual perception of gender. These objects reformulate the compositional aspects of each image, distorting the human form and pushing toward abstraction when viewed from a close distance. Through this process, I aim to question conventional representation norms, satirizing gender stereotypes challenging their biased construction. Abby Cocovini Bubblegum and a bag of Salt & Vinegar, 2024 Oil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) And your features, what is it about them that is unique to you? We all share the same two eyes, a nose and mouth yet even identical twins look different if you look at them closely enough. Whether in a portrait or a painting of people on the underground, Abby makes sure she's always looking, finding new ways to bring stories to life through her use of colour, composition and ways to use paint.
