Los 1585

A framed and glazed portrait print of King George V and Queen Mary, 1911

Los 302

The portrait of an Imperial German military officer, probably a general [three stars on epaulettes] wearing a single-breasted black or navy blue frock coat. The uniform has a stand-up collar and is profusely embroidered in bullion with the sleeve facings done en suite. He is holding a chapeau in his left hand. The picture measures 11-1/2" x 14" and is framed in a gold-finished oval frame with a crown, “L” cypher and oak leaf wreath at top. Beaded edge. The painting is signed in red at bottom: J.Cossyil. Pt. Showing wear and age patina with some elements broken or repaired. Surface of painting with scratches and voids. Painting held in place by tape on back of frame.

Los 304

Oil on canvas, 28" x 25" relined. Unframed. Portrait of Leopold I (1640-1705) anointed King of Hungary, Bohemia and Serbia and elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1658. Leopold's reign was marked with conflicts with the Ottoman Empire in the east and with his French cousin, Louis XIV, in the west. His military career was marked with great successes against the Turks, recovering most of the Kingdom of Hungary from their hands. However, in his last war with the French coalition, the results were less than spectacular, although there were no material losses in terms of Austrian territory. This appears to be a court portrait, possibly original to the period, but likely a later 18th century copy. Condition is very good overall; despite some recent, long scratches to the run from the background to Leopold's armor but could be easily restored and do not affect the face of the sitter.

Los 307

Oil on canvas, 49 x 36 3/4 inches, within modern, composite frame. Full-length oil portrait of Louis_Napoleon Bonaparte (1808-1873),the only President of the French Second Republic and later crowned Napoleon III, Emperor of the Second French Empire (1852-1870). The portrait appears to be a copy of a contemporary work, done in the 1850s, when Napoleon and his army were involved in the Crimean conflict and prior to his intervention in Mexico during the 1860s. There is significant craquelure and some lifting, but no loss to the image. Varnish is heavily yellowed and professional conservation cleaning is recommended.

Los 947

Rifled octagonal barrel, signed "PK" in script in an ovoid panel decorated with acanthus leaves on each end. Barrel possibly a recycled barrel, as original sight grooves have been filled, the front with brass, and engraved, appears to probably have been made this way, rather than shortened, due to placement of signature in relation to rear sight. Flat percussion stamp engraved lockplate with rounded tail and marked "J. GOLCHER" in a banner. Double set triggers. Ornate pierced four piece brass patchbox finely engraved with scrolls, foliage and florals. Brass convex button, open patchbox lid on toeplate. Rococo scroll in center with acanthus leaves at each end. Large engraved brass inlays featuring an encircled flower on each side of forend between front of lockplate and entry ferrule. Rectangular bone inlay on face of cheekpiece and a large brass inlay below cheekpiece which reflects the shape of portrait above and is engraved. Typical Kunz type two-piece pierced brass sideplate engraved with scrolls. Left side of buttstock inlaid with a large engraved Indian chief's head with a headdress in bottom corner. Highly figured full-length maple stock of familiar later Lehigh County, Pennsylvania form, inlaid with six small bone stars, three on each side of barrel tang. This is a very elaborate and ornately engraved rifle by a well-known master gunsmith, probably one of his finest examples. Excellent condition; barrel retains a dark brown patina with some pitting around bolster and breech, some light pitting at tang and scattered marks. Lock retains a brown patina with some light scattered pitting. Brass and silver have been polished but now retains a dull finish with some dark areas, engraving shows very little wear. Stock refinished, some scattered dents, minor age cracks and marks from use. Serial Number-NSN; Manufacturer-Peter Kunz; Model-Rifle; Caliber-.50 Bore; Barrel Length-38";

An unusual & rare pair of 19th century portrait miniatures believed to be of Rear Admiral John Pasco (1774-1853) & his first wife Rebecca Penfold. Within later frames. Approx 9cm tall. NOTE: John Pasco (1774-1853) was a flag Lieutenant aboard HMS Victory who was responsible for raising Nelson's famous signal 'England Expects'. He advised Admiral Nelson on the precise wording that should be used for raising the signal. He was appointed to HMS Victory in April 1803. He served time in the Mediterranean under Nelson & helped the capture of the French frigate Embuscade.  In 1805, during leave from the Mediterranean he married Rebecca Penfold on the 1st September. Rebecca Penfold is believed to be the woman in one of these portrait miniatures.  During the Battle of Trafalgar Pasco was severely wounded to the right arm. Due to the consequence of his wound he received a grant from the Lloyd's Patriotic Fund, and was given a pension of £250 a year.   From 1805 & 1846 he mainly commanded small ships. He served on HMS Tartarus on the North America station until 1815. After the Napoleonic War, Pasco commanded HMS Lee and was employed to suppress smuggling in the English Channel. During this period he wed second wife Elizabeth Weaver in 1843.  In 1846 he was appointed to command HMS Victory, which at this time was the flagship of the Port Admiral in Portsmouth. On the 22nd September 1847, Pasco was promoted to Rear Admiral.  Rear Admiral John Pasco died at East Stonehouse, Plymouth on 16th November 1853 and now rests in Stoke Churchyard.  More information can be found on the National Museum of the Royal Navy website: http://www.nmrn-portsmouth.org.uk/sites/default/files/John%20Pasco.pdf
