Although honoured in the USA the British Government were not happy and a seven day ultimatum was issued by Foreign Secretary Lord Russell, British troops were sent to Canada to prepare for possible war with the US. Unwilling to fight a war on two fronts and bowing to International pressure, Abraham Lincoln surrendered Mason & Lidell on 26th December 1861.
