A Chinese black and white photographic portrait of a dignitary in a carved frame, dated 1901 -- Description: Photo: 13,9 x 9,8 cmÊ Frame: 24,8 x 18,7 cmÊÊ Ê Provenance: Jean Jadot ('Souvenir affectuant ˆ Mr et Me Jadot, Shanghaï, 4 mars 1901').Ê The person depicted is the adviser to the Director of the Chinese Railway Company, who was, together with Jean Jadot, in charge of the development of the railway (see: G. Kurgan, Jean Jadot, architect of the Belgian expansion in China, Academie royal of overseas sciences, Brussels, 1965).
Dutch school, attributed to Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656): Portrait of a nobleman in armor, oil on panel, 17th C. -- Description: Work: 74 x 59,5 cmÊ Frame: 95 x 80,3 cmÊ Ê Several parallels can be drawn with a portrait of a nobleman, half-length, in armor with a white lace collar and an orange sash, in a painted oval by Gerard van Honthorst, sold at Christie's Amsterdam in 2013 (Sale 3040, 20-21 November, Lot 72; link) or with several portraits of Friedrich zu Dohna (1621-1688) after Van Honthorst and by his workshop (link).Ê Ê Provenance: with an old inventory number '36' on the reverse.

(33)⁂ Sally Soames (1937 - 2019) was a British photographer known for her black and white portraits and photo-journalist coverage of the Yom Kippur War of 1973. Celebrated for her ability to disarm her portrait sitters with her warm and exuberant personality, she was able to capture some of the most memorable photographs of the 20th century of people such as Margaret Thatcher, Orson Welles, and Rudolf Nureyev.
