19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SCHOOL - Portrait of ? Charlotte Bronte, bust length, her hair tied in a bun, charcoals heightened in white, 8 3/4" x 7"; and a pair of 19th Century School drawings 'Going to Market' and 'Returning from Market', each signed with a monogram and one dated '46, charcoals heightened in white, 14" x 20" (all items unframed) (3).
Charles Hayter (1761-1835), 'Portrait of Frances Ann Kemble', wearing dark head scarf, long bust length, watercolour on ivory, oval, signed with initials, 7.5cm x 5.5cm Note: Fanny Kemble was born in London in 1809. She was the daughter of the notable actor Charles Kemble and niece of Sarah Siddons. She became an instant success following her debut as Juliet in her father's production of Romeo and Juliet in 1829 at the Covent Garden Theatre. In 1832 she accompanied her father on a tour of America and in New York met her future husband, Pierce Butler, heir to one of the largest slave holders in Georgia. Seeing first hand the conditions and treatments of slaves, Fanny became a vehement abolitionist.
Alexander Keith RA (fl. 1836-74), 'Portrait of His Grace, The Duke of Wellington', wearing black jacket and waistcoat, three quarter length, seated, his top hat beside him, oil on canvas, 124cm x 100cm. Provenance : The Glandyfi Estate. Note: Alexander Keith was a successful Edinburgh portrait painter who exhibited two works at the Royal Academy and nine works at the Royal Scottish Academy, as well as elsewhere in London. A plaque on the frame of this picture suggests that it was painted in 1848. Wellington retired from political life in 1846, although he remained Commander in Chief of the Forces, and returned briefly to the spotlight in 1848 when he helped organise the military force to protect London during that year of European revolution. He died in 1852 at Walmer Castle and was honoured with a state funeral.
After Henry Smith (fl. 1741-69), 'Portrait of James Stewart, 8th Earl of Moray (1708-67)', half length, oil on canvas, 76.5cm x 63.5cm, also the companion 'Portrait of Lady Margaret (nee Wemyss)' - a pair (2). Note: These portraits are copies of the originals by Henry Smith in 1741, which remain in the collection of Wemyss Castle. They commemorate the second marriage of James Stewart, 8th Earl of Moray, in 1740 to Margaret Wemyss, the eldest daughter of the 4th Earl of Wemyss
