Attributed to John Phillip, RA, 1817-1867, portrait of a Spanish lady, oil, 18 x 12cm, in an ornate gilt frame, together with a collection of framed signed prints and a gilt framed wall mirror (9)Condition report: Overall quite loose in style and has a red monogram to bottom left. Attributed on the frame. The frame itself is period and ornate, but has heavy overall damage and losses. The canvas does not appear to have any damage, but is behind glass and has not been removed from the frame for a long time. Was removed from a local house clearance in Essex.

China.- Staunton (Sir George) An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China, 3 vol. (including Atlas), second edition, engraved portrait frontispieces, both slightly offset onto titles, engraved plate and illustrations, Atlas vol. with 43 engraved plates and maps only (of 44, world map supplied in facsimile), some folding or double-page, occasional marginal damp-staining and spotting, browning, one plate with short tear to image caused by browning, abrasion mark to front free endpaper where label removed, text vol. in contemporary tree calf, rubbed, extremities worn, joints split, Atlas vol. in modern half-calf, 4to and folio, 1798.⁂ The second edition of this important account of Britain's first embassy to China, sent in 1792 and headed by Lord Macartney. Staunton was the secretary to the embassy which travelled via Madeira, Tenerife, Brazil, Java and Sumatra - the account includes a lengthy description of Rio de Janeiro, as well as one of the most important insights into Chinese life at the time.

NO RESERVE Egyptology.- Richard-Desaix (Ulric) La relique de Molière du cabinet du Baron Vivant Denon, 'printed in a small number', half-title, etched portrait frontispiece of Denon by himself, occasional light spotting, original printed wrappers bound in, later burgundy calf-backed marbled boards, spine gilt, a very good copy, large 8vo, Paris, Vignères, 1880.⁂ Baron Vivant Denon (1747-1825) French artist, diplomat and archaeologist, best known for his Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute-Égypte, 1802. The main body of the work is given over to the history of a piece of one of Molière's bones, which Denon kept in a 15th century reliquary along with other bone fragments. Following this a detailed bibliography of his book on Egypt is given, including translations (pp.35-43).
