OIL PAINTING BY NATHANIEL LAKEMAN. Portrait of a well-to-do young gentleman. Identified and signed on the back John Marland, Painted by N. Lakeman, Salem, Mass. No. 102, April 1826. Nathaniel Lakeman worked in Salem and was born in 1756. John Marland was born in 1803 and listed as a Manufacturer living in Essex. Appears to have been painted on a thin canvas covered board. Revarnished with professional restoration. 27h. 23w. Frame has gold repaint and minor edge damage. 32h. 27 1/2w.
OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING. Portrait of a seated girl wearing a red dress. She has brown eyes and wears a gold necklace and earrings. An old paper label on the back identifies her as Caroline Darrow, painted about 1820-30.... Her family moved to Buffalo (New York) around 1850 and later descendants lived in New Jersey. Rebacked and restored. 25h. 21 1/4w. Gilt frame has some wear and edge damage. 30h. 26w.
OIL PAINTING ON WOODEN BOARD. Three-quarter naive portrait of a gentleman seated in a brightly painted highback Windsor beside an open window with drapery. The man wears a brown waistcoat and holds a book in his lap. Penciled details as well as sketched guide lines. Surface wear. 9 7/8h. 7 7/8w.
OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING. Portrait of a man identified in German as Koppel Rosenfeld born in Uhlfeld 1770... He has greying hair and side whiskers and sports two gold hoop earrings. Cleaned and revarnished with areas of touch up with surface wear. Found in New Hampshire. 14 1/4h. 11 3/4w. Ornate gilt frame with some damage. 19 1/2h. 17w.
OIL PAINTING OF A GIRL. By William Prior. Portrait on canvas of a girl in a mustard yellow dress, holding pink flowers. The canvas is backed with a wooden board, an additional backing board covers the frame and has a penciled notation Painted by Wm. M. Prior July 7th, 1855 in New Bedford. Additional notes appear to be prices. A few minor touch ups. 18h. 14w. Gilt frame has gold repaint. 22 1/4h. 18 1/4w. Ex George Considine.

Full-length portrait on cardboard of a woman seated at a mahogany table with red drapery and yellow sash in the background. She wears an elaborate lace and red ribbon bonnet, gold jewelry and a blue dress with leg-o'-mutton sleeves. In her hand is a red rose. A penciled note partially reads Watts 4 Centre St. Crease, minor edge damage and some surface wear. Glued along the top edge. 9 3/8h. 7 1/2w. Curly maple veneer frame with corner blocks. 11 3/4h. 9 5/8w.

WATERCOLOR ON PAPER. Full-length portrait of a man in a frock coat, holding a top hat and standing on a patterned carpet. Naive style but with a well defined profile in pencil. A paper label from the American Folk Art Gallery notes the painting was found in Connecticut and is similar in style to Joseph Davis. Overall darkening with light stains. Worn gilt frame. 10h. 8 1/4w.
WATERCOLOR ON PAPER. Portrait of a girl seated under a tree with her pet cat on her lap. Miniaturist detail to the face with less detail elsewhere. She wears a red dress with a coral bead necklace and matching red shoes. The grey tabby is quite content. Light stain. 8 1/8h. 7 1/8w. Gilt frame has wear. 10 1/2h. 9 1/2w.
MINIATURE ON IVORY. Double sided locket with a portrait of a woman with wispy blonde hair wearing a light blue hooded cloak. Initialed H.F.F. and lined with silver foil. The other side has a carved tortoise shell frame surrounding a central ivory medallion that has a woman reading before a classical plinth, all in white and blue. Gold filled frame has minor wear, the tortoise shell has cracks. 2 7/8h.

Joachim Smith British 1737-1814 Portrait bust of a gentleman signed J.S Fecit and dated 1771 wax with polychrome decoration the miniature bust on a painted glass ground contained within an ebonsised moulded circular frame together with two wax miniature portait busts after James Tassie 1735-1799 circa 1900 both signed Tassie one inscribed 'Mrs Anne Stewart Edin. [Edinburgh] 1795' and the other inscribed 'Robert Adam Architect died 4 March 1792 in his 64 year' (3) diam. 17cm. and the other two h.16.5cm. w.14cm. Joachim Smith (1737-1814) was a not only a wax modeller but sculptor and cameo engraver. He started his professional working life in 1773 for Josiah Wedgewood and is recorded as working with wax during this period. He went onto produce wax portraits from life for use as models for gem cutters and engravers. His fame grew to the point where he was able to exhibit twenty-eight wax portraits at the Royal Acacdemy in 1793/4. Like his comtemporary Tassie he enjoyed great success as a modeller of notables and fashionable figures of the day. Literature For further reading on both Smith and Tassie see E.J.
